I'm looking for a 500 compressor for my home rig. I already have an Igs LA2A clone, the limiter in the Tree Audio Branch, an Spl Dynamaxx. I'm covered opto wise for my small rig but I need something to catch peaks and sculpt drum sounds with a bit more flexibility. So variable attack/release is a must, mix knob is a plus!
What are you guys rocking?
thanks guys!

CAPI FC526 is my "catch it clean before dipping it in goo" peak limiter

I've been eyeballing these lately. I'm looking for something that's like a clean 1176... do you think the Tonelux would fit the bill?

FMR RNC 500. It’s cooler than the original unbalanced unit.

Serpent splice or sb4001.
Or really...classic dbx 560a. Cheap to find used and a nice versatile vca comp.

Serpent SB4001 is cool for drums and mix buss. Yes, I was going to add this one. Actually, even in Mono it's good for all kinds of stuff - bass, acoustic guitars, vocals. Pretty much whatever you want to throw at it if you're willing to twist knobs. Plus, the blend!!!!

Actually, the LED array on the 560a is over the top cool. Sometimes I'll route stuff to them just for the light show. But actually USE them? Not often, and not if I've got a Splice of 4001, or pretty much anything else. I love the vintage 160 VU models, and the 160A is decent and even the 160x is OK. But the 560's just seemed to drop the ball for me.

A 560a!" but I have often looked over and gone.."Hmm..I wonder.." and tried it and been surprised. But just as often gone, nah nevermind. But for a generic 500 compressor...it's pretty darn generic sounding. I've had it do cool stuff to some Bass tracks though. And snare too. Not a 160 that's for sure. There are a lot of options out there that are far better in various ways. But for $150ish bucks I can't think of something that is better for that price. And the disco lights are sweet haha certainly no 500 anything with as many LEDs in it! haha!

Serpent Splice. (1176 A/D) The Splice is really at the top of my list. Not cheap though. Has any one compared one with the CAPI 1176 clone?

To be honest, I've never loved SSL buss compressors and I don't really a stereo comp for most what I do. I mostly a mono guy and I don't compress the stereo buss.

Curious what you think about the SPL Dynamaxx. I've been looking into it as a VCA option, based on Tim's comments. wana know the same. how do u like the dynamaxx? vs the LA2a clone? more cleaner? The dynamaxx is a good utility comp. I don't use it that much, occasionally to shave a couple dbs during tracking. I used to use it quite a bit for Mixbuss but haven't been compressing my Mix recently. It's pretty transparent and easy to work with, I like the compression characteristics of the LA2A better for most things. The IGS 500 LA2A is pretty clean, cleaner than a real LA2A I used to have. The Tree comp is much more colored, very thick but behaves a little weird, I don't find it as set and forget as the LA2A. For the price used the Dynamaxx is a bargain. For most things I would like having variable attack/release, particularly to sculpt drums. I find it would be a great live compressor.

I just tried the eq a couple weeks back. It sounds nice, very powerful eq, you can really sculpt drum sounds but I liked the general vibe of my Capi lc53s better, totally different sound as they're inductor eqs, the Capi tone is a little sweeter overall and more colored. I felt like I could get close to what the Tlux did with my fabfilter plugin.

What are you guys rocking? thanks guys! My TK Audio BC501 has recently been kicked off of my mix buss because I found out how much it rules on drums. Doesn't do mono, but that's fine for me. Great compressor. Not variable att/rel, but it covers a lot of ground. The sidechain options add a lot of flexibility in sculpting the envelope of whatever you're using it on. Wet/Dry function is also nice. THD switch does a thing, but it's not heavy handed. Just kind of a nice mid enhancement. I just leave it on all the time.

It's a bit more than what I'm willing to spend but it's still a lot cheaper than an original so. And the blend feature should be compulsory on any new comp. I demoed the Acme comp not long ago, and thought the color was amazing but that it would really benefit from a blend feature as I found it almost too heavy handed on any setting.
