They note it as AMS Neve in the video description. This is exacatly what I needed to hear. Thank you @gearlust . No problem so which one u prefer? The Neve without a second thought. It reminds me of my Dan Alexander. It has extra dimension. The Aurora sounds good. It's just missing some of the low end.

After all the preamp talk yesterday about how mi-nute the differnce they make, this is what it comes down too lol 😂 ordered a 73 myself to test the eq one instead of dual pre version 😬 I’ve said over and over here as many will attest...I have a weak spot for Helios...it’s irrational. Same with me on the 1081. I used one for a week once and my life hasn't been the same since lol.

Not a bad shootout. Wish it had vocals, but you can really hear the differences between the Stam and Neve. Has anyone had the Stam next to a Neve or BAE?

"An original Neve 1073..." "AMS bought out Neve in the nineties..." "This is the clean sound..." Good stuff!

Hey Stam- when did you start including the custom 1777 Sowters? I bought my pair of 1073s in July, 2017. Got the Sowters because I wanted to get as close to Neve as I could.
Love the preamps, either way.
Thanks, Malkit

It's so interesting how transformers make such a big difference, even though it can be subtle. I remember a friend's Cascade Vin-Jet ribbon mic, when a Lundahl transformer was put in, it was then in a completely different class. Interesting, definitely! Surprising, no, not when you think about what a complex device a transformer is (or can be) electronically.

It's only a Pre Quell, it's only a Pre Quell. Chris Shampoo?

Still think that’s one of the biggest differences in new and vintage pieces. Just the metal alloys they can’t use anymore.

It's only a Pre Quell, it's only a Pre Quell. Chris Shampoo? Sometimes it can end up as just a wash anyway. Or merely a Hairball... Chris

Has anyone used the Neve 1073DPX Dual Microphone Preamp/EQ? At $2995.00 It's really not a bad price all things considered for 2 full 1073 strips. I feel like I'm missing something? (2) 1073s from BAE is twice as much, but their dual channel preamps are pretty evenly priced.

It sounds great. I like it better than the Bae.

With the british metal guy video, I could hear a difference in the low end on guitar and bass, but I really thought the Stam sounded good, especially on the vocal test.
On the video with the AMS Neve vs Aurora...the best part was that artwork hanging in the studio! You don't get to hear too many christian songs sung in front of a woman squeezing her boobs like that. But on the sound...I think the difference in the mix was much harder to notice.

Still think that’s one of the biggest differences in new and vintage pieces. Just the metal alloys they can’t use anymore. It 99% is... I had a very difficult time reproducing a Marshall Plexi transformer back in the day. The (awesome)impurities in the metallurgy, the annealing process and the potting material are all much different now.

Hmmm...I've not educated myself on this. What metal alloys can't be used? Link if it's easier and doesn't derail.

Hmmm...I've not educated myself on this. What metal alloys can't be used? Link if it's easier and doesn't derail. It's not about what types can or cant be used... Its about the goal. Transformer is where all the love for mic pre's and tube amps come from.... Its NOT the tubes per say for example. There are LOTS of options and manufacturing has changed over the years. There are Steel , Mu Meta (Nickle) etc.... There are types of steel, M19, M6(6%silicone) grain oriented.... Early steel for example was not nearly as refined and it had Nickel and Cobalt elements in it and it added to the harmonics openness, warmth and bell tones we now appreciate and have difficulty reproducing....

Mike Castoro also told me that some alloys aren’t allowed because of environmental standards.

Its like the new microwave production now a days and they just banking on the name There a reason all these vintage gears are more in demand. Get a GAP pre and save about $1500-2000 for almost identical thing. there is a recent shoot out between GAP and AMS, its so close in phase cancel each other. check link below. www.gearslutz.com/board/gear-shoot-outs-sound-file-comparisons-audio-tests/1220749-blind-shoot-out-golden-age-premier-pre-73-premier-gap-vs-ams-neve-1073-dpa.html

I have the Stam SA73 with the Sowter, and it has all the beef I need. I haven’t compared side-by-side to a Neve like that shoot out dude, but Joshua is right, with the Sowter it’s a completely different animal.
I have used Neves, unlike so many online big mouths. This Stam gives me the same vibe, even though I don’t know if it’s exactly identical, it has the warmth and bigness you look for in a Neve sound, so I’m happy.

That's a crazy comparison. At this price it may be worth trying this out. I had both and picked it correctly. The new AMS one's really have a 'dark' thing going on, which some may or may not enjoy. The GA units are great as long as you find the sweet spot, which might be a little smaller than others.

I ended up tracking down another TNC AMCP-84. Waiting for it to arrive. I'm gonna send both to Revive Audio when I can put the cash together. It's full circuit modification. This includes, noise reduction in the circuit, swapping of the transistors for low noise and higher gain and bandwidth, audio cap modifications, power supply modification, Transformer shielding, Switch position removal for the models affected by the position on those not originally in the design and number of other things. They will also swap the Chinese transformers for real Carnhills. This should give me the extra pair of Neves I'm looking for and a very usable pair of 1084 style EQs. I'll let everyone know when I do it. Maybe do a quick preamp shootout.
