It's so interesting how transformers make such a big difference, even though it can be subtle. I remember a friend's Cascade Vin-Jet ribbon mic, when a Lundahl transformer was put in, it was then in a completely different class. I feel the exact same way about the Cascade Fathead. Wasn't worth owning, imho, unless it had the lundahl in it.

I'm glad for example, that Mark "thought ahead", with development of his Samar AL-95 ribbon. Sounds excellent as a result IMHO. So many of the "affordable" microphones particularly (paging 'ol Chinese LDC's), need aftermarket "steroids" to really shine. Like you guys didn't already know that! Chris

After all my talk about pres being overrated. I’m really fighting gas for a new pre. I know, I weirdly have the same problem even though I clearly don't need another preamp... mics and EQs make way more sense and even then it's not exactly pressing.

Launcher's been a blast for me!
Mostly at home now, other than "essentials"... It made the 4 different dynamic mics I have IMHO, sound noticeably better-more euphonic.
Coming from the Low End side of the fence, it certainly is more of a contrast to my Prosumer interfaces/Pre's. Chris

With most all of us, stuck at home now... Hardly any logical impedance to it. Chris

Resist. says the guy who bought a new preamp in December. Though, literally the first preamp I've bought in over a decade.

Chris, you make a great point about the right pre amp making a mic sound more euphonic. It's like 'ah that's how the mic is supposed to sound' could well be an impedance thing, I don't know but whatever suddenly a 57 has an integrity I never previously credited it with. Cheers, Ross

I will, I just find myself looking at CAPIs sometimes as if it makes any damn sense for me to buy... two. (I already have Leiber 2520s and cinemag output transformers for a build lying around, and they have been for like 10 years now.)

I feel you on that. If I ever win the lottery I WILL have a Helios console. Preferably a wrap around variety. I truly believe the Strawberry Helios is the most beautiful piece of audio equipment every made.
