any good? i mean they are pretty reasonably priced. i never took them seriously before, but looking more into, i see they are fully discrete and aren't all that bad.
i just bought 3a JR for $350.. any users here? do they sound pro? how do they compete with stams? are they stam ballpark in quality cause stam sure nail the sounds of vintage gear
i need a nice tracking leveler with some nice color to the tone. i know they have chinese transformers in there, but nobody seemed to be complaining of the quality. SOS reviews them favorably.

I have a Comp-3A. I like it.
I generally prefer other compressors for recording, but it does have a cool sound. Definitely brings the midrange forward and has an aggressive sort of "bite" in the high end.

You could just pull a transformer and send it to Cinemag and request they make you transformers or if they could just supply it. Owner is David, very helpful and deeply knowledgeable guy. Hairballl Audio has a transformer kit already for the 3a talk to Michael.

The 3a jr looks like it has an input and output transformer but no interstage. The 3a has all 3. Im sure you could just swap them in and out if you're up for it.

On one hand, I love the simplicity of it, and it does handle heavy compression pretty gracefully (you can easily do 10dB GR without sounding overcompressed). On the other hand, the overall character is just a little too vibey/saturated for my tastes. Other people seem to have some really impressive results with it. I think it depends on what other gear you're using — my mic/pre are both pretty mid-focused, so the GAP is just a bit much.

If you opened it up and took a pic we could guide you. Basically, it’s very simple unsoldering, and desoldering of transformers leads and then physically removing the old and installing the new transformers, again pretty straight forward.

It acts as a voltage step-up stage for the AC signal that lights up the EL panel. The EL panels need something like 70-90vac for full brightness. An autoformer is a type of transformer that is more like multiple inductors in series, but with a common core.

My 3a clones are parked on acgtr. I have a Laz and a Gap. Thought about changing the T4B cell... And that's it. I like the grit/sparkle the GAP adds. My Urei LA4 is on bass or guitar.

Get mine tomorrow. Read about people using 1176 into la2a/la3a. Going to experiment with spl dynamaxx (fast n clean) going into a comp3, may produce cool results

You could do the output transformer easy enough(the big square thing). The Input would be a bit harder due to having to unsolder it. Easy with a desolder gun but that's not cheap(Round silver can thing with black tape on it). Looks like it has two 2520 style op amps as well you could switch out for a lot of different things.

Just a thought, check your costs for buying these parts and getting them installed vs waiting till Chris at Audioscape gets his 19 inch done and selling yours and just buying a new 2 unit one ?
Or if you have a 500 chassis getting his 500 series 3a?

The samples are prety good on its own. I doubt you can even tell in a mix. I just may just keep it as is. Audioscape heard about them recently. If theyre anything like stams, I may consider it
