Ha. But it's a cool barn. I've been in it. Me and the mice like it. Ugh...mice and audio gear = nightmare. I've got stories..... heh heh

Re: the subwoofer situation. I can't really comment on checking bass in phones. I suppose that can work great if you're used to what you're doing, and have checked translation. I don't tend to use em, so they would probably not be helpful for me. At least short term.
I don't employ a sub to get big cranking lows. I use it to hear the energy factor below what my speakers can effectively pull. If you don't have a sub, unless you have megabuck speakers that go loooow, you're not hearing a lot of LF information way down that's eating up your headroom, and clouding the punch of the LF.
Yeah, Subs are a MAJOR pita to get right. But that "little extension" to what the speakers themselves are doing is huge.
BTW, to implement, double check, mute, change levels, etc. - a great monitor controller with the ability to mute the subs, change the level on the subs, and (hopefully) delay the subs vs. speakers is critical. I use the m905, and it does all that aside from the delay, which is a bummer.... But I get around it.

Ugh...mice and audio gear = nightmare. I've got stories..... heh heh Little field mice - they've never been a problem (unless I leave my stash out.) Don't know if there's a difference with different kinds of mice. Now ants...before I started using a pesticide powder in the cement cracks, they liked to file in via the foundation and hang out on top of racked gear where it was warm. And crickets...hard to find and ruin many takes. I finally figured out if I left the wolf spiders alone, they took care of the crickets. Spiders are powerful creatures.

I have the LYD48 monitors and I also have a sub (not Dynaudio). I used to use a sub all the time but still I couldn't get the low end right. I got Sonarworks and tuned it without the sub. Much better results now. I think it's hard to get a sub to fit into the overall sound. For some reason, in most cases, if feels like the subs live in a different area, if that makes sense. I still occasionally turn on the sub just to hear where the <40hz material is. But for mixing, I don't use a sub anymore.

The volume on my sub is almost completely off.

They LOVE wire. For them, the insulation is like candy. They especially like Mogami. They crawl in the back of amps and make nests. If gear or wiring is open, they get inside and chew wires apart. Oh the joys....

I've seen rats chew right thru the 24 pair outer shield of Mogami, and after that's stripped back, the little field mice can finish off the individual pair, and individual wire shield. Insane. They love it.

So to me, it’s looking like perhaps the LYD 48s would a great place to really befin my research. They are well liked by most, and are three way with an 8” woofer. They spec down pretty low. If I pull them in to try and I get better mixes that translate well, I am done and for not that much money overall. If like them but decide I could use/need a sub, the Dynaudio 18s with the DSP presets etc for the 48s isn’t that much to add. Thoughts?

They're okay. I don't like them as much as the old BM6a. They lack headroom for a 3 way or even an 8" woofer monitor and have the Dyn warmth down low that makes everything sound good.

I am not sold on them by any means. This is the info gathering stage and what I like so much about here is pleasantness of the discussing. I am very open to ideas. I had looked at the ATC SCM20 but people say that they have a very light low end. Also have been very interested in Ocean Way Audio Pro 2a but there is hardly any info at all on them.

They tell me everything I want to know about the mix and they're an absolute joy to sit in front of. Here's the thread with my initial thoughts as I was evaluating them. I still feel exactly the same. realgearonline.com/thread/7324/new-monitors?scrollTo=138866&page=3I don't use a sub, never have. Maybe someday I'll give it a go but for the time being, I've never felt the need for it.

I use a sub but setup is very easy since i use Genelecs. All AES connection and has built in DSP to get the alignment correct. And it works very very well.
Use 8240As and a 7270A at home now.
Use 5 8351As and 4 8240As with a 7270A at work.
GLM software for calibration.
That said, if you have a good set of speakers that are full range it's not needed. But you also REALLY have to learn the speakers.
My new dream setup is 8351Bs with the new W371 towers. Someday...

I don't need one, but for me it definitely helps keep the bass in perspective and the mids easier to hear. Dynaudio BM6a pair and a BM9s. But I'm in a barn, so my hearing is obviously fvcked up. Ha. But it's a cool barn. I've been in it. I have the Dynaudio LYD 48 and a Sub18S ... wonderful My room is 6.5m x 5.5m with 3.5m ceiling.(21 x 16 x 10 in feet for you pre-metric folks :-) ) I measured the response and then used the EQ on the sub to treat the main nodes. This EQ is why I got that sub in particular plus it has DSP that match it to the LYD48s Very happy and my mixes are translating really well in general

I believe.
