Haha!! And for a contrarian position, I hate mixing on NS10's. But when I did mix on them, I had Pac Inn mono blocks. That made life a little easier. Heh heh heh.... That's kinda like dropping a Ferrari V-12 in a Plymouth Valiant, drbill! Haha! Yeah, kinda. But believe it or not, it really transformed them. The day I hooked up the amp I had clients in mixing. I sent them out for lunch while I kept mixing, and mid-way, I thought I'd change out the amp which I'd been meaning to do for a few days. It made a huge difference, and when they came back, the first thing they asked me is how I changed out the snare drum. True story. But it still wasn't enough to make me WANT to mix on NS10's. LOL

LOL It reminds me of the first time I heard the little Tannoy PBM’s with a Hafler Transnova really wasn’t a fan of either but together they didn’t blow me away but, they worked.

Ready to hate me more....I use a Samson Servo 120 with them! No, I haven't tried other amps, but for the price it works great! Quiet, powerful, works for me.

The answer is yes, if you take the time to listen, think of amps this way can you hear the difference in pre-amps? Well a power amp is basically serving the same exact function except at a much higher level of current and voltage. Sometimes I can hear a difference in preamps depending on application.
But power-amps driving/damping speakers?? Damn! Those are slap-you-in-yo-face differences!

I hate the NS10's. LOL. I mixed on them exclusively for about 10 years, then woke up one day walked into the studio and wondered....."why am I doing this to myself". Pulled them off the meter bridge, put them into storage and never looked back. That was one of the happier days of my studio life. "For the price" didn't really enter into my mind at that point in time....

I blew up my M-40 and while it was being repaired, hooked my Adcom 545 to the Tylers. They sounded REALLY different. Didn’t like them until the M-40 came back online. Bliss.

There are very, very few actives that use anything but generic plate amps. The exceptions that come to mind are ATC, PMC and Questeds. In theory Active should be better, if you actually build the amp around your driver selection and can build better closer tolerance crossovers. Reality sucks, most speaker guys are not amp guys and vice versa. In my gear pimp days I will say I have to admit actives are just easy to sell, nobody cared how an amp sounded with a particular speaker it was all about Watts. Right now the amp selection here is a stock Adcom 545, a JW modded 545, a little single space Quested 25 watt is in the kids room and Van Alstines take on a modded Dynaco 25 watt tube amp. No ARC, Crown Reference Bryston, Krell all gone.
They bombarded me with those facts at the Geithain factory, and I am sure they run the extra mile to design the best active design they can. I asked if a human ear can hear the extra time and investment... vs a well build external amplifier.
The answer was somewhat ambiguous... I always ask myself if I could hear the difference (blind test) using a special design, or a modern cheap class-D 150$ amp from e bay.
I don't think a blind A/B test is really valid in cases like this. You really don't know withouit extended listening and preferably actually doing some real work with the amp so you know how it affects what you do, whether it causes ear fatigue with extended listening, etc, etc.
Righ now all my monitors are active but for the most part I wish they weren't.
Cheap crappy Class D plate amps....

I use Truth Audio TA-1P that I love. Currently I have a modern Crown XL something or other. I had a Rotel that sounded pretty nice, and needs one channel fixed. Then a stop gap Alesis amp that I should have replaced sooner than I did. The Crown has a really clear low end and general tone to it.

I know you don’t hate me:) I’m not sure what it is about them, and they’re not my main pair, but I can make really fast balancing decisions on them. The music seems to translate really well. I’ve gone through tons of monitors in the past few years, and when a friend lent me his ns10’s, I was like, “Oh! That’s what I’ve been looking for!” Horses for courses! I’m sure I would dig Amphions if I could get them in my room. I also think I would really like proacs as well. Listened to some ATC’s that blew my mind, but way outta my league price wise.

Update: Since buying Stratboy's Pelonis 42s, I have retired my Dynaudios -- so I'm no longer passive.
Gotta say, these things are fantastic!
