You know how us Canadians never do anything controversial so thought I would just ask innocently what peoples fav 76 version is and why or if they like different 76’s for specific things?

I have two Hairball Rev A’s, one Hairball Rev D, and owned a Warm 76 which I think is also a Rev D. Generally I’ll use the Rev A’s for the that need some midrange punch. Vocals, guitars, snare. The Rev D has less saturation and handles low end better. I use it on bass, kick, and vocals that I want to keep cleaner.

Thx yes Warm’s are D. I have 2 and one HB 76A, which I also really like.

Does a 176 count? If so, that gets my vote.

For me, currently, Splice set to Rev A beats everything - plug or hardware. Have not had a chance to try one of the AS 76's yet. I have zero doubt that they rock hard.

Splice's definitely sound amazing. However, you NEED to try a 76A or two though my friend.... ;-) At the VERY least - you'll have a slightly different, yet every bit as good "variation" of the Splice. When we're discussing products at this level of sonic quality it's tough to say one is better than the other. As we always say "you can do different, but you can't do BETTER..." ;-) No V76 planned.... V72 is more our speed Speaking of - we just scored and racked up a pair of V72's for the AS Studio!

Actually, I think I will try the F's when I get a chance. Interested to hear those. One cannot have enough 76's can they?? Rhetorical. The answer is of course, no.

ah Dr Bill, that is kind of where I am at as I have come to realize how much I like 76's and the idea of having a few pairsof different versions and of course cut the faceplate colours look cool too !

Honestly? The best tone is the Bluestripe Rev A/B which audioscape has with the 76a. But it has two advantages over the original: 1. NO NOISE!! Or at least much much less and 2. IT'S EVEN FASTER! 6 Attack and 5 Release on the audioscape is like 7 and 7 on an old one. Now that's the most 'tone'. As for the best general purpose 1176? IMHE it is the Revision F, not the D. The D might be creamy on bass or overheads, but the F is also great on vocals, dynamite on snares and overheads and gain rides a bass guitar track like a champ. These are only my opinions, and if you agree with them it's only because you've tried a lot of the same gear or used it for years and years and come to many "that's not working" or "ok, that works" types of conclusions. And you might come to COMPLETELY different conclusions!!

Thx, interesting as that is how I am leaning towards another A and 2 F’s for the reasons you state, !

I have the Purple MC77 and it's my favorite compressor. I think I'm going to use this quarantine bullshit as an excuse to finally build a Hairball Rev A. Need to keep my brain occupied.

Just did the HB A and very pleased had a couple of problems reading resisters correctly, but ya go for it: very pleased with it sonically and metal work is impressive.

I’m sure it will sound great too: go for it ! How did you find the calibration process? I've built a bunch of stuff, so I'm very confident in my soldering and all that, but I've never attempted something like that.

I messed up my build a little so sent it in and they calibrate for you .
I had done it myself too and it seemed straightforward and is described accurately in the build thread .

I’d go with an 11, either Urei or early re-issue. Makes just about everything sound more like a record to me.
