So.. Reverb or Ebay to sell stuff? I think it depends on what you're selling. If it's a common desirable item I'd try Facebook Marketplace first to bypass taxes and fees. Be prepared to ship if you're willing to, and also figure out how you want to get paid because it doesn't have the built in seller/buyer safeguards that Ebay and Reverb do.

FWIW the used/online stuff at GC, has been drying up. IMHO some stuff like used Oktava's, will go up in value used. Chris No they took a bunch of the stores that are closed off line, better than paying now and it ships in June!

I bought a pedal the SamAsh was selling on Reverb... They refunded because they could not open the store to ship it.

I quite agree that poverty is not a very nice thing. And being raised in poverty is even worse. And I feel that this current global scenario will certainly increase poverty even more. So yes probably a little too crass to coin a term poverty prices. I stand corrected. I'm not poor right now, although if the stock market keeps crashing I could end up that way. I have a reserve in the bank that's earmarked for gear purchases and unforeseen emergencies that's separate from my living income, which I have little control over, but should last me another 3-5 years unless the market gets significantly worse. (I lost about 30% of my principal in my income reserve in the 2007 recession and never recovered from that.)
As to buying and selling gear, it's like any other volatile market - one tries to buy low and sell high (assuming one sells.) Market trends go with the economy. IMO the used gear market has been going through a cycle of exaggerated inflation for about 30 years and is long overdue for a real correction. That's bound to be painful for those who "invested" while the cycle was peaking, especially for those who tend to pay retail market prices.
Theoretically money should be worth significantly more in terms of buying power during a depression. The trick is actually having money to spend at such times.

I would stay the hell away from Facebook Marketplace - it's not safe and the people who run Facebook are totally irresponsible. If you must resort to unsafe sites you should insist on using Paypal and don't use the "friends and family" option. It's not worth risking your entire payment to save a few bucks. If you're really cautious you should use Paypal connected to a credit card, not a debit card or bank account, because then you get another layer of protection from the credit card company.

I agree that with FB there’s risk involved. However it can be an option if you proceed with caution and it probably depends on what kind of money we’re talking about. I sold a Shure mic instantly for cash to a local sound company for instance. If it’s a long distance thing you can check out their FB page to try and get a sense of how reputable someone might be. A month ago a saw a Shure 548 for $150, alerted a friend who wanted one and he had it within days with zero problems. But as I said there’s not much protection there. If it were a larger purchase I’d insist on a phone call. Unlike Reverb FB Marketplace can be where average folks look to move Uncle Jerry’s weird crap. But yeah, proceed with caution. As for FB politics I get that and would switch in a minute if there was a viable alternative for gig posting etc. But one could have good reason to sever themselves from all of these mega corporations-Amazon. Netflix, etc.

Amazon at least provides an excellent one-stop shopping place, especially for stuff that might be difficult to source locally. Or simply because one is feeling lazy.
EDIT: Tried it out. Searched for "Neumann microphone", which would appear to be a common search term. Turned up 3 or 4 new Neumann second stringers (TLM 103, etc), all new from dealers and a huge number of mostly garbage other mics.

New tax laws for eBay/Reverb is the killer these days.
Bring back forum/paypal sales!! They seemed to be very popular at one point, then everything went more away from it.
I'm all for taxing things online in general (wasn't fair for legit businesses), but used audio gear that is already been taxed likely a few times seems a bit much. Oh well not much we can do about it now, except try to trade more on site like this.

I guess it's too much trouble for them to differentiate between privater sellers and commercial dealers. Dunno, but I can think of several easy ways to do it....

I just bought a pair of monitors from Strayboy from right here. The purple site still has an active classifieds section as well -- although it's all linked up with Rev-Bay. These two gear forums provide a good amount of exposure.

These two gear forums provide a good amount of exposure. Yeah, I was going to mention The Great Purple Swamp. There are other fora with buy and sell sections as well. I like the smaller and more professionally oriented sites because they're less likely to be overrun by professional sellers.

It's a dealer. and either a very optimistic or slightly delusional one, IMO.
Dealers can generally afford to hang on to well hyped items until either a sucker comes along or they go out of business.

It's better to search FB nationally. As an example I just searched for Neumann. Click on THIS LINK. I'm not saying that there's anything special there--like eBay you have to wade through a lot of things you don't want or need. But sometimes that's part of the fun. I'm in no way a fanboy for Facebook. I'm just saying that if you're looking for gear why not scan all the options.

Very few Neumanns, nothing interesting, must of it vastly overpriced. Lots and lots of AT, Blue, MXL, Shure, AKG (cheap, new), other stuff that's not Neumann. One guy selling his "studio" for somewhat more than I would expect to pay in a store. No sorting. No moderation of posts to be sure things are listed correctly.
May look back occasionally, but frankly I find Ebay much more interesting. At least when enter a search there you get the good stuff (if any) before all the extraneous junk. I don't think many pros post much on Facebook, at least for sales.
After the emergency has been going a bit longer I'll probably start posting a few WTB ads on some of the audio sites. Usually I just wait for a good deal to walk by and try and jump on it before someone else does.
Thanks for your assistance, it's appreciated.

I realize that not everyone here is a fan of Facebook Marketplace. I still maintain that it's worth scanning for deals if done wisely. Today's case in point, I received an aluminum early 70s Ludwig Tambourine shipped from a very nice lady in Indiana that mostly deals in antiques and collectables. If you've read some of my other posts you know what a fan I am of Ludwig tambourines but up till now I didn't own a metal one. This is the same model the Beatles used on Hey Bulldog. $13 plus shipping.

Just sold a preamp on here. Fees (via Paypal) ended up being $20 instead of $88 using Reverb/eBay.
Do it! Embrace it! Love it!

So the new “Reverb Payment” system. Anyone read up on it yet? I didn't like Reverb Bucks, and I like the idea of giving them my bank account information even less.
