Patchbay language I currently run 2 ob that are all 1/4 balanced. I like the idea of TT:) Can someone explain this in plain English? There is a gs classified post about 3 96 TT for sale: “Two ADC and one Switchcraft, I think, all hard soldered to the jacks with West Penn studio wire. Two are still punched down on ADC punch-down blocks, bays nicely wired and loomed. Patch cables and TT to XLR cables available.” I always worry that buying a used hardwired pb is likely a problem or you just clean the fuck out of it and reflow everything ? Thx!

I only buy used bays, I always completely strip all the wiring and rewire using solder. I don’t have any problem with bays using punch blocks, they just don’t ship well with a loom wired to the punch block. One trick is to buy the 2 space bays nobody wants on EBay for parts, they always go cheap.

I bought 7 used to elco90 bays off eBay and drBill, no issues. You have to know what you are looking for and if the original tt jacks will support the normaling configuration you want.
I ended up converting half of one bay to a ground switching Jack for mic to preamp patching. That one was the biggest difficulty as it was a complete rewire/rebuild. One big helpful thing I did was to buy the pre-tined normalling jumpers from redco. I also have a nice pair of auto strippers.

I've bought 6 used Switchcrafrt 9625 patchbays. All of mine. Only one had a hitch.
Quality TT bays are the only way to go.

I've bought a handful of TT patchbays. Most I've rewired even if they came wired. I'd stay away from old brass telco ones that occasionally get listed as audio gear. Those tarnish too easily.
I've never paid more than 50$ for any of them because they always end up coming up on ebay eventually. It's the cables that seem to always be expensive unless you find a used lot.

I love the old brass Switchcraft bays but I also made the minor investment in a set of burnishing tools to keep the contacts nice and clean. There's a nice set of burnishers that was designed by the great LA studio tech Charlie Bolois. Highly recommended. IIRC they were about $30 each and they last forever. If maintained properly the brass Telco bays will last forever - a lot of the others are not that sturdy.
I don't remember where I ordered them from but could probably figure it out if need be.
