In the mid 90's I recorded Richard Hardy playing tenor sax for a friend's album with a Rode Classic paired to a Joe Meek VC 1 and he thought it the best sound of his playing ever as mostly his parts were captured with a Sennheisser 421. a 421 for sax? I could never make that work... but what says our resident sex expert, drsax?

If we are going to put Classic Sennheiser on sax, I would reach for the 441 personaliy, but live the 421 is workable, you just have to twist that EQ knob to find what works for the player and the horn. The other day a guy grabbed an old AT ATM63 not n/d version, for his Baritone, forgot just how good it can sound. Ended up with a AT 3035. It gave us more life in the highend a bit of air.

And yes, a 441 by far over the 421. And an old 414 anytime. That’s a great sax mic

Why, drbill would be ashamed of us all if we said any different. Rabble starting addendum warning . . . P.S. The U87 has NEVER been something I would use on a sax as it makes a sax sound honkier than a 19th century Calvinist hymn sing. (Too far?)
