I recently bought a small console in Nashville a few weeks ago. The seller told me freight pickup didn't happen last week due to the tornado and that his place was generally not affected, but that he would have to figure out what he was going to do now.
I'm growing concerned about it because I wired him the money in mid-February and he didn't mention anything about lead times. Any of you folks out there have a recommendation for someone who can pick that up for me and ship from there to California? Are businesses still disrupted?

Getting things crated and arranging freight can be a slow process, never mind a tornado disruption. I'd put it on the list of concerning but not alarming. If there's crate/freight involved there's ALWAYS lead times, unless they run a shipping operation for a living.

If there was proactive communication I wouldn't give it a second thought. But I do seem to be doing that, probably because I've heard more than once that I would be kept in the loop and that didn't happen, and the unusual method of payment. I just thought it might make sense if it was at all practical to propose I pick it up myself and see what happens.

I'd say PayPal has done a bang-up job of making people think bank transfers are an unusual method of payment. They are not. Standard for houses and cars. Standard in Europe for all sorts of interpersonal transactions. I don't know how much this console cost, but think about it, would you take the paypal hit when selling a car? I wouldn't. That may or may not be a reasonable comparison in this case. I still prefer taking a road trip with a hidden money belt full of $100's and $20's if possible. I once bought a console from a guy 12 hours drive away, and after 2 months passed with no action showed up unannounced on his doorstep. He practically threw the console at me to get me out of there.

Did you buy it from a dealer or individual? If it’s from Sphere I’d recommend pick it up yourself and if possible testing it to make sure it works as described.
It’s also important to know that some dealer are really just brokers for deals and don’t actually have the consoles in house.

If anyone in that area knows of a good shipper who can pick this up, let me know, thanks.

I'm not interested in gossiping, but yes it's Sphere, and I did sort of know what I was getting into. If anyone in that area knows of a good shipper who can pick this up, let me know, thanks. The shipper isn’t the hard part it’s the crate. You want the crate. Your best bet is to hire someone you know and trust who gets what they are doing buy them a ticket to Nashville and rent a truck, label the module order, pull the modules pack them well. Securely strap down the frame in multiple directions. I suggest using slit swim noodles to protect the frame from scratches and cushion it from shocks. I also suggest contacting your bank it may help if this seller is trying to screw you or scare them into doing right by you.

Use a Credit Union with shared Branch I can walk into a credit Union almost anywhere and get a cashiers check cut for $5!

Amazing how many people will still only take cash on a multi-thousand dollar transaction. The only receipt I get is in pencil with no names on it, but it's got a date and a dollar amount.

In case your wondering why labeling the module order, often there are jumpers that involve routing that can totally screw you up if the module isn’t in the right spot. You will pull out your hair, abuse love ones and pets, start drinking to much only to discover all you need to do was put that damn module in the right slot.

Paypal charges you 3-4% but it provides 100% replacement of your money including shipping costs as long as you have a tracking number. I personally think that money well spent between strangers.
We have had differences of opinions about this here before so no need to argue, as each time I contact Paypal to confirm its dispute process, I am told the above and I have collected a number of times from Paypal so it’s worked for me.
Anyway , sure hope everything works out.

There are several freight companies in Nashville. There’s probably some place they’ve used in the past but you might just call a couple companies yourself, tell them dimensions and weight, and get some estimates.
To answer another question, I don’t think you’ll have any trouble finding a freight company in Nashville things are as back in terms of power being back on pretty much everywhere and on to rebuilding here.

Freight company isn’t his problem, in fact a freight company has no need to be “in” either the pickup or destination, in fact the best price can more often than not be from a freight broker or consolidator such as TQL ( shameless plug they are located a whole 12 stories below my Apt.). The problem is getting it crated and really contacting anybody before it’s crated and you know size approximate weight, location and time it is ready for pickup is pretty useless.

That’d be a harder robbery scam to try and pull in my world. These things can almost always be vetted ahead of time. Everyone knows of everyone else, and you know where they live when the cops need to know. And! In my own personal experience, it’s far safer than any transaction with D in question!

Piano movers!!!!!, I used one from Seattle to NC for my Neotek Elite. They even help put the legs back on! Air ride climate controlled and no need to crate. they wrapped the shit out of it with moving blankets and strapped it down. Super smooth and wasn't that expensive.
