I always do blind AB testing when it comes to purchase a plug in. If it is difficult to tell plug in and hardware apart I can't go wrong at 14.99$
I don't have the hardware to A/B test against. Maybe I wouldn't be impressed with the hardware version either? At any rate, I was expecting more / better. Time will tell if it ends up in the unused bin or not. I guess maybe my expectations are out of whack. This is twice in the last week that I've gone for a plugin and then not really liked it that much. Both to rave reviews by many folks. When I patch in hardware I usually get a big YES or NO, but I get a reaction to it. Both plugs left me feeling, meh.... The word is out big time - plugins "are bridging / have bridged" the gap between software and hardware. I'm not buying it. But I admittedly am biased in the hardware direction. Thanks for the tip though. I"ll just skip dinner one time this week, and that enough will offset the cost - and end up a gain. LOL
The Hardware does sound a bit more open, you look deeper in the sound field, the attack-release behavior is somewhat smoother. The low end is more rolling.
But the hardware is 4,5 to 5 K in Euro including VAT. I think the plug does a great job for 14.99$
Depending on the source material it gets hard to tell hardware and plug in apart.
I think its just another tool. If I see people like James Taylor mixing with his AE ITB...
In this case I know learning never stops and it starts with tracking the sound which I have in my mind.

I did not demo it. Thanks to you guys, it is a 15$ bet. If I use it just once, it'll be worth it.

You will use it, special because its tracking latency is super low.
Today I tracked acoustic guitar Dynamic Mic ->1073 -> VLA2 (BYPASSED JUST FOR SOME CLEAN TUBE MOJO)-> into SPL IRON Plug In.
It sounds beautiful....

Are you guys still loving this?
I still haven't used it for real. I haven't had time to really test it and learn it, and everytime I throw it randomly on the mix buss, usually in a hurry for some fix, I get second thoughts and try something else.

That’s interesting. Usually I have hardware on the mix buss and for those times I have to stay ITB I still haven’t found my piece.
My hardware comp is SSL style (TK Audio). ITB I always try the SSL style ones I own (P.A. Townhouse and Slate) but it’s hit and miss.

I like the SPL Iron I think it's big, fat, wide, smooth sounding. Some people complain about the stepped level knobs which makes a perfect A/B less possible.
Usually I end up using SSL, limiters, Shadow Hills on mix bus, but this one is good to have as an option for the thing it does. I have only used it a handful of times, though. But I can't argue with the sound quality.

I still use it and love it. Mostly for mastering, before brick wall limiting. I have a couple hardware pieces on the mixbus and then into SPL Iron and a few other things for mastering.

I use it on the mix bus in MS MODE nearly every mix love it to death and I heard the thing side by side with the hardware. They are insane close, some minor pitfalls in the low end etc....see my post above.

I use it from the beginning on my mix bus... it's not SSLish, but it sounds very nice.
Use it in MS mode just few db reduction and I always toy around with the RECTIFIER settings, because this changes how the beast reacts.
I love to make the low-end MONO - mono knob. Subtle stereo widening...HP filter... VOILA....
I love the thing, but it took me two mixes to get to know it better and better. One day I understood the idea behind IRON I was floored.
To my ears one of the best plug ins out in the jungle...

thats how i use it too. i use the rectifier that gives me the ssl comp sertings: att 30 ms / rel 0.1 (cant remember which one, i got it saved as a preset). i only have it max 1 db GR on the mixbus. lowest bias, higher bias colors/distorts to much, makes a whole mix more cloudy. and the monomaker is like 100 hz most of the times, 110-120% stereowide. like you said, no ssl sound but plenty of glue and keeps snare nicely in the pocket. makes everything more compact and „ready“. because of the monomaker, the bass/kick is tight. like you, i put it in early on and mix into it.

I have it, but I prefer Pulsar MU or the Tone Projects Unisum. Or even one of the Magic Death Eye plugins. Just my personal opinion.

All on my long term list as well but my kitchen is well-equipped. Times never have been better yet to cock a nice meal.
