I played the 2002 24" cymbal and I thought it sounded beautiful and nuanced. Sounds completely different to a K ride though, more bright and shimmery. It will get super loud if you hit it that way, but it doesn't wash out the entire room like some big heavy cymbals will. Just wanted to dump my Paiste experience here. Apparently Giant Beat is the "bonham" ride. Some folks say the current re-issue Giant Beats are a little different than the originals. I don't know since I've never A/B'd them. I love the re-issues, though. Never really cared for the 24" 2002 but the 24" 2002 Reverend Al ride is wonderful. And, not too different sounding from the standard 24" Giant Beat. Good stuff!

I know a guy that plays "vintage hand hammered K's only" because the machines do the hammering now. He won't even touch the new stuff from K. He goes to the factory and talks to the company workers. His vintage Sonor acrylic drums and Gretsch 1940's brass snare with hand hammered K's is like playing "God's drums." I ask him if Pearl Export drums are good and he says they're totally fine. Black acrolite snares are "great snares." Cracks me up. I guess I should just ask for a list of all the drum gear he owns and buy everything on it, instead of asking for tips. I totally get it though it's the player that makes the sound, but come on what's the good stuff.

I like the 2002 series, they are even a cool color, but I’m going to go the Zildjian K/K dark side. I heard these cymbals were spun using the force? Obi Wan Kenobi uses Zildjian K, and so does Chuck Norris. So, that kind of swayed my decision. When you play many years I guess you get tired of the same sound. I want softer and quieter cymbals for now.

K Custom Dark are nice compromise for an all around line of cymbals.
Personally I’ve come to prefer Paiste because they are extremely consistent so when you find one you like and something we’re to happen to it, a replacement will sound very similar.
But, I’ve heard and own/owned lots of great Zildjian, Instanbul, Meinl, Sabian, Cresent, Murat, and Bosphorus cymbals so I don’t have a preference. Just hit some stuff and see what you like

Beautiful dark cymbals can be alluring in the store but sometimes cant cut through even a quiet mix, live or recorded. FYI Dream cymbals can be great for the money but inconsistent so need to be tested. If you’re open to going vintage Transition stamp A can be great—zildjian was still handmaking them at that time.

What’s your cymbal configuration? 14” K Dark Hi-Hat 16” K Dark Crash 17” K Dark Thin Crash 18” K Dark Crash 19” K Dark Crash 21” K Dark Ride(Not sure about ride, going to have to play many to see)
Forgot to put Custom
Need to find a store that will let me take them to the studio, record them in a mix, and then take back what cymbals I don’t like. I’m probably going to mix them up a bit.

My favorite all time cymbals are the Zildjian Constantinoples. They can be a little washy and or soft for rock, but in my small room with the kind of music I record, they are perfect.

I have a 20” wuhan ride that constantly gets picked over our other rides. Haha.
The HHX series is nice. Similar to older Zildjian in tone.
The Bosphorus 14” hats I have are excellent. But haha. The wuhan 14” hats often work. They are super thin and quiet.

I've been playing a Bosphorus 20" Ferit Series Turk Original Ride, about 15 years. It didn't take long to sell off two of my three K rides after buying because this has worked well in every room and recording situation for me. Its warm, dark, bright, articulate, shimmery, depending how I hit it. It crashes huge and immediately goes back to stick. I wish the bell was a tiny bit larger, would be easier to hit. but its not too loud like most bells are. I play Rock, blues, country, jazz. Don't know about metal or hip hop with this one. Also play Bosphorus Master series 14" hats and 18" crash. Hats are actually bright but never harsh.

You might want to look into a company called Heartbeat Percussion. They are making cymbals that tend to be thinner and larger that have a much smoother decay. You have the initial brightness but then the volume drops and keeps it from getting too brash. Great hand hammered cymbals and quite affordable. www.heartbeatpercussion.com/

This series I have started to like and will continue to buy. Dark and comfortable in tone Meinl Byzance Vintage Cymbals Meinl Byzance Extra Dry Cymbals KR Håkan Meinl Byzance all the way. Those cymbals are just fantastic. Paiste 2002 are also a classic, for good reason.

Ok, so the OP asked for configurations and now I'll be more exact in more config . . . granted, I'm a lousy drummer but pretty good knowing what sounds good and how to capture it.
Hats: 13" and 14" Zildjian K dark, depending on song. Also have a set of 14" bright Sabians Crashes: 16" K Dark, 17" K custom dark, 14" Wuhan (virus free) medium brightness Splashes: 8, 10, 12 Zildjian darks, 10" china splash, 12" Wuhan (also virus free) Ride: 20" K Dark, best recording ride I've ever come across. And an LP Ice Bell, usually upside down
Been meaning to add others. Muril's sure seem interesting too.

I’m a drummer so here’s my 2 cents. Don’t buy the cymbal packs. Find a really well stocked drum store and spend a few hours. Listen to hundreds of online clips so your ears will start to hear the subtleties. You will never find the one perfect ride so think it terms of 2 or 3 to cover your bases. 60s A zildjians are often very reasonably priced and much better than new ones. Go on cymbalholic and educate yourself. It’s a deep topic. If you don’t need to buy a whole set right away don’t. Let your ears and knowledge catch up first. I agree, don't by packs. Go to a shop and listen to some cymbals. If the store has one of the those cymbals walls, TAKE THE CYMBALS OFF THE WALL. Those things make even good cymbals sound terrible. Ask the salesperson for a couple of stands to put cymbals on to audition. Buy a pair of the sticks you like from said salesperson even if you don't buy any cymbals. Once you have some you like, play them on a drumset. Crashes are rarely played without BD or SD. Hats and Rides need to be heard in a groove. Bring your cymbals to see if the new ones make sense with the ones you already have. If you can't get to the shop, there are some good shops that have recordings of the actual cymbal. I've actually had good luck with Hazelshould on an Anatolian ride and a Bosphorus crash. I wish I could afford the Bison Volcano snare he has...
