Ah, I bet I know what mic collection she bought. DO TELL! Bob Paquette passed away a little over a year ago and his private museum was liquidated.

Guess the flip side is, who has a $1m mike collection to sell and what else do they have?

You can make a great record with 10-15 mics, pres, and a few choice pieces of outboard. The way I see it, we are at the apex of vintage gear prices, and you really don’t need a giant collection of vintage mics or consoles to get work done. As long as you have a great performance, a great song, and a way to capture it you’re all set. A great sounding room with a decent vibe goes a long way too. I can’t see dumping a huge amount of money into gear that is “cool”. Find what works and get to recording!
We have 10 vintage Neve modules at one of the studios I work at, and one of them is usually on the fritz or needs some massaging. Not worth the headache to me to sink money into something like that.
I think the best benefit of the console in front of you is the ease of routing while tracking, but it can be worked around without a console, no matter how cool and vintage those beasts are.

This and that.... I mean a few nice toys are not bad.... Never sold my Gefells and Neumanns.
But for the rest - yes we are at a spoiled climax.
On the other hand its good we have to focus on performing / arrangement / tracking.
Plug ins can sound good special if there is no gain staging error. But it's a pain in the ass to fumble with the mouse, this is the biggest pain for me.
BTW. If had 1 million dollars I would not buy microphones for it. I would invest it in some nice flats around the town, when I am old I have rental income...

The guy had a few mics...
1. That is a super cool mic collection. 2. Out of those 1,200 mics, I wonder how many are in "record ready" condition? 3. This totally seems like the sort of thing Sylvia Massy would buy, even if half of them don't work (assuming that she is the one who purchased it). 4. It would take me multiple lifetimes to sort through that collection and figure out which mics I liked on which sources and in what situations. 5. I think it would take Sylvia multiple lifetimes as well. 6. She obviously doesn't care that it would take multiple lifetimes. 7. She obviously has way more money than I do. 8. That is a super cool mic collection. 9. I am super jealous. 10. Is Sylvia single?

Yep, and I was in that room once for about 10min and thought I was in heaven. I’ll bet she sells off 1/4 of that collection and breaks even.

The thing is even this collection is one where to truly appreciate it you need to be well somebody like you. So much of it was old broadcast stuff that you know was going to end up in a dumpster, don’t get me wrong the classics were well represented, but so much of it was old dynamic, Crystal and ribbons most have never heard of. It was overwhelming, but made me so proud to be a cheesehead! Anybody know if somebody took over the publishing of his book, I always wanted to grab a copy but just kept putting it off?

I never got the book either...... : ( I know the majority of those mics, but certainly not all. He had so many prototypes and early historically significant mics that people know of, yet extent examples run in the 1-5 pieces, things NO ONE gets to own.

They have more than one Neve/more than one location, I wonder which one is for sale. Looks like the Neve from Broken Arrow Ranch is going to be sold eventually too.

If anyone is stupid enough to pay that kinda of price for a OLD Neve console, and thinks it's bring in more work in this music business?
Well, then they're not of sound mind. Period~!
How much work is that thing gonna bring in, really? Please.
Now if you have the money, and just want to own a vintage piece of history, well hey, it's your money. I guess it's no worse then buying a $$$ painting and putting it up on the wall to look at.

How many clients are prepared to actually pay for the cost and upkeep of vintage gear like Neves and multitrack tape machines?
Clients like the cool factor of 'vintage' but getting them pay a premium for it is another thing entirely.

Looks like the Neve from Broken Arrow Ranch is going to be sold eventually too. They’re closing the San Francisco studios. Just keeping the newer Oakland one, which I believe has a neve as well. Haven’t been to it yet

It’s funny at least half the sound of the classic records is tape. And her board needs work.. So I guess I should list my fuse blowing Studer A80 MK2 24 track (mid 70’s)... for $325,000 as well. Fuse blowing? Most likely the power supplies need recapping. I'm not sure how many an A-80 has, my A-800 has five. It's not THAT big of a job, besides the basic mechanical thing of physically pulling the supplies and reinstalling.
