Just thinking about upgrading...I would think the DA would be something that I use on everything I do...I do more mixing than recording these days...so I’m leaning DA.

DA every time for me. IMO, small differences in ADC tend to disappear in the process of mixing/mastering. DA is much more critical to my ears. Plus you only really need a stereo pair to get the job done, so that's a little easier to set up than a whole new recording interface.

DA is also something a lot of converters go short on.
So I'd go for a DA first. But a top quality AD is great if you use a lot of outboard or do any printing of any kind.

How would you evaluated the quality of an AD without a great DA?
So, DA. No matter whether you're doing more tracking or mixing or whatever.

So, 1) Apogee SE 2x6 2) CraneSong Quantum Hedd 3) Dangerous AD+ / Convert 2 4) others (Burl, Prism, Lavry, etc.)?

DA then AD. Or get a Lynx Hilo for a similar price and have both including a nice clock

Just curious since I was thinking about adding an Apollo X, are the X series Apollos not up to the task when it comes to the DA? I had thought they were vastly improved over the Apollo Blackface, which is all I have experience using before I moved over to the Symphony MKII.

I must say that upgrading my monitoring output to a Grace m905 (DAC / monitor controller) make significant improvements in my mixes, and my ability to discern what was going on in my mixes. I don't actually "print" through it, but having it to monitor through was a game changer for me.
IME the only other thing that comes close is the Crane Song Avocet II. I liked the features on the Grace better though. Suited my work flow better.

The Crane Song Avocet II DA & the Crane Song Interstellar AD make up the DA/AD of the Quantum HEDD. The only problem here is the wait time. Dangerous's Convert 2 DA & Convert AD+ AD are sold as separate units but are available immediately. Apoggee's SE 2x6 comes together & is the least expensive of these 3 choices. For PT users, the Avid I/O's are still competitive.
If buying new DSP speakers (D&D, Genelec 83xx) there'd be no need for DA's. Burl comes separate also. Prism you can get together. And then there's Merging, DAD, Forsell, Lavry, RME, Metric Halo, ...

I am really thinking about getting back into an Apollo with an X series. I wonder if I could feed the Apollo into my Symphony 2x6SE for DA and monitoring. I really like the idea of the Apollo with Luna for tracking since I have so many UAD plugs.

Better AD for me, but that’s just because I’ve had a massive epiphany about the fact that I really dislike the sound of my Apollo.

I chose AD because I like to run my mixes through outboard, and the return on the Burl was significantly better than the Apollo. Plus, I’m really happy with my blackface 16 Apollo’s DA. When I got it I sold my Dangerous source because I thought it beat it, but I did buy the source for my old silverface Apollo.

AD is far more important to my ear. The difference between great AD like JCF and mediocre AD like Apollo is MUCH greater than the DA side in my experience. The JCF AD8 is the most important piece of gear I have ever purchased and it would be the last item I would consider selling...

I do believe this to be true to an extent...your DA does not directly affect the sound...only indirectly by revealing things. But I’m still thinking if you can’t hear it, nothing else really matters.

You do good mixes, above average I'd say. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
