Btw - it’s pretty freaking amazing. Did you ever get to spend time with the Solaris? No

Is the Convert-2 still a good buy in 2020/2021? Isn’t this 5-6 years old by now? Which leads to another question, how much ‘better’ can it get?

On the basis of bargain DA give the project Prebox digital S2 a serious listen, if the idea of Hyper detailed is what you crave I can’t even begin to tell you what the Mytek Brooklyn DAC+ is like.

I had one of those S2’s. Ended up sending it back. Sounded good, but really didn’t fit, as far as form and connectivity. Plus, it just “felt” cheap. I’ve been monitoring of my Motu stuff, but I know it can be better. I can score a Convert-2 right now for 1750 (plus tax...urgh!).

Yeah but every time I hear it and think how little I paid, I just get giddy. Granted with the Mytek here it now lives in the kids room. I still love the thing though.

I have been interested in a monitoring DA that feeds my BF FP01 for awhile. I use the SF Apollo.
For those that monitor off their interface then switched to a dedicated DA how big was the sound improvement ( if any )?
Was the monitor DA worth the $$$ & time it takes to interface everything correctly?
What are some monitoring DA choices for $1000 or less? ( is this a big enough budget for a monitor DA )
Would a monitor DA be a beneficial upgrade or would the $$$ be spent elsewhere like more acoustic treatment?
Thanks

The Topping D90 (AK4499 chip) and Topping DX7 Pro (ES9038Pro chip) seem interesting to me. They both have both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA outputs, which can be used simultaneously or individually, and they are both fairly inexpensive. Their measured performance seems to be incredible, better than the much-more-expensive RME ADI-2 DAC and Pro. They have USB, AES, coax, optical, and IIS inputs. The D90 measures slightly better than the DX7 Pro, especially if the volume control is bypassed, and has volume up-and-down keys, but no headphone amp. The DX7 Pro measures slightly better with the rotary volume control bypassed as well, and has a headphone amp with 1/4", 1/8", and balanced headphone outs. They both come with a simple remote control and selectable filter settings.
I had an RME ADI-2 Pro, and used the front headphone outs as a second output to select between two sets of speakers, one balanced and one unbalanced. It worked but it was really kludgy and complex. So the Topping units look really interesting to me, both as a high quality DAC and to be able to select between two speakers without having to use the patch panel.
Note that I have not yet tried either of these units, so I'm just summarizing info I've gleaned from various websites.

I'm having an issue with my Convert-2 DA. I connected the Convert via USB. With the trim all the way down, I’m getting a really low, really hi-passed signal from my right monitor. As soon as I turn it up, I’m only getting signal out of the left monitor. I tried different USB cables and it happens on both the studio Mac Mini and my MacBook. I've also tried ADAT with the same results. I swapped the analog output cables, and the problem followed the cable. However, when I connect the output cables back to my Motu, everything works. Am I doing something wrong?

Seems strange to me that the problem follows the cables. To me, that points to a problem with my "system" (cables, etc.) and NOT the Convert. But then, coming straight out of the Motu, everything works properly.
I have emailed Dangerous, but who knows how long that could take.

Audio/Midi settings? You have the USB button selected I assume? Have you tried using the optical connection to just see if it will pass sound?

I guess it comes down to, do you want really transparent DA or something say more musical? I think the convert is more on the musical side with excellent soundstage and dimension , my sense after reading tape op review?
I guess on paper the convert specs: aren’t as clean as some other boxes, but dangerous is all about sound quality and features?

Dangerous has awesome customer service, call them during the day during business hours and they can walk you through it. I had a problem with my Demo Convert2 D/A and ended up returning it.

Tracked the problem down to the volume trim. With the volume knob fully open until it clicks (out of circuit), the problem goes away.
