Hello everyone. Here is one of these live recordings, check it out here!: adamlevy.bandcamp.comThis was the old set up, with the Ampex and BG1 stereo for mix compression. All EV mics, RE16's and 648. Super great! Thanks for sharing.

Almost done with the first of the 6 channel mixers, still need to get it fired up and tuned in! Here's a little more info on these new ones. 6 mic input/2 line return stereo console. The chassises came from NOS from a salvage warehouse, I probably have 5 or 6 of each size (14 inch, 17 inch and 20 inch), beautiful hardwood sides I'm finishing in Danish oil. These came in their original cardboard box, I think some of them have CBS order stickers. I'm really excited because I've had these for years and its been driving me crazy not to have a use for them. I say 6X3 because the echo output amp and summing is the same as the mix bus. Each input has a Cinemag CMMI 10C, I love this transformer and use it in my Delta 4-7 dual preamp. output is vintage Hammond transformers. Each of the six microphone inputs have variable pad down to line level input, I use this to get mics right where I want them as far as gain on the fly. input impedance switch (200 or 50) and phase and three low filters, This is all passive before gain stage. Then it goes to a EF86, this can be switched from triode to pentode on the top of the channels via a locking toggle switch. On mine it really transforms the mixer with all switched one way or use them individual for each channel. triode is smooth and creamy and hifi, pentode is aggressive and mid range forward, 3D like, cuts threw a mix. Each EF86 has its own large film cap for power, thats what those gray boxes are, same as the output amps. Then there is a treble cut, this is like a guitar tone control when engaged, after the gain stage so you can have treble cut for as aggrieve as you want to go before it. Panning is 5 way, Left-Center-Right, but a 3/4 pan in between so you don't have to go extreme. There is also a echo send! Pre or post fader switch, this actually uses a extra deck on the APLS fader, do if you turn this all the way up and go post fader, it will act like a 3rd channel. All summing is mepco gold resistors, these are from old aerospace salvage NOS, these just really beautiful to me and have extremely low noise, just really smooth and detailed (I use a rotary switch to jump between different components to hear them in the circuit, thats the only way I can really be sure the differences in sound and different music). The output amps are Delta 4-7's, basically a EMI redd47, 3 feedback gain settings and one no feedback give the 4 gain settings on the echo and bus amps. the more feedback (LOW) is more hifi and controlled sounding, no feedback (OPEN) is very colorful and bid. Master output attenuator and echo master output are basically variable faders after the out transformers, so you can control the output if you want to drive the mixer harder. Everything in the mixer is entirely hand wired, sold wire used throughout. External power supple and DC heaters of course. Hope everyone is doing well!

If I could get away with just having studio based around something like this with a handful of ribbons, dynamics, a few German tube mics, and maybe a couple pultecs and a nice limiter I would sell everything else in a heartbeat.

I have a plan to do that one day, and I do have some ideas for the compressor rack! I actually was going to try this out at United where I used to work at United, but now things are all up in the air as far as schedule with COVID... So hopefully soon I can try it out there and see what its like.

Beautiful. How do you handle EQ? The Adam Levy sounds top notch.

Beautiful. How do you handle EQ? The Adam Levy sounds top notch. thanks! About EQ, I don't. The Adam recording was done with the ampex mixer and BG1, so it didn't even have the filters. My personal mixer just has a high pass filter switch at around 70 Hz, I might ad a second one at 150 too. These new mixers have 70, 140, and 250 and also the top end cut that would be very useful. The circuit is simple and sounds very good, I haven't had a strong feel that channel EQ would be needed, plus I can't really hear well enough at a live show with headphones to actually make that decisions. I do use a pair of api 560's to kind of mix on the transfer, using hard panning I can actually turn up or down things with individual left and right EQ later (not on the Adam record, that was mastered right off the Nagra without much eq I believe).

Well, after a lot of work and testing, this is the new mixer, for production under Highland Dynamics. Variable input pad from microphone to line level, high and low pass filters on every channel, D.I. Inputs, input impedance section, independent tube operation- Pentode or Triode, independent output amplifier pads and feedback gain (including no feedback at all in OPEN). Mix microphones together, filter and get the lows from a 57 mixed with the highs from a U67 on guitar, bass or snare. Mic up a drum set and print a single stereo drum track. Run a mix clean through two channels and over drive the mix on the other two, filter your overdrive tones. Or do like I do and record a whole band with it! Of course all tube. This is some of the most fun I've had recording.

All EV mics, RE16's and 648. If I go to your Bandcamp page, which song or songs should I listen to as an example of this recording setup with the Ampex and EV mics? I followed the link, but I see a bunch of different stuff on there. I wasn't sure which one to listen to.

I have a friend on another forum who is selling a newly rebuilt Altec/Langevin 3 out mixer if anybody's interested and has the money - it's not cheap, but it's ready to go. PM me if you're serious. He also has the matching 3 track tape machine. He has to sell because, essentially, Covid wiped out his business.
