I have no idea what "the magic box" you speak of is, but I do have pieces of gear that always make things better when I run thru them. Better as defined by "me". And better as defined by what I'm looking for. I don't always slap them on every signal, but when I do, they rarely come off of it. As far as talent is concerned, it's a given that you have to have great players, great performances, and a great song first. Anyone who denies that is either a fool or has never done this job. But after you have the raw materials, that is where the magic boxes take over. We all have our favorites that make music sound like what WE want it to sound like. It might not suit what others are looking for, but it gets us into the zone....

So if I buy a Strat and a Marshall I can sound like Hendrix? no but if Jimmy was in the studio you wouldn't pull out a first act guitar and a practice amp!

Quality is either in the source or it's not there. Any magic box can only enhance an aspect of the source that's already there and the magic would be something that brings it out in a way you need it for mixing. I'll take a good source without any magic afterwards over a so-so source and some magic any day.
