I'm burnt out on 421's. Kinda want to switch to e906's but I thought I would ask y'all for thoughts on alternatives.

My lowly e604 always work perfectly for me. I find nothing wrong with them and never felt the need for an upgrade. Am I crazy? I’ve also used a SM57 for the 10” tom with fantastic results. And an e906 for floor toms, or an SM7. All of them equally fine.

What kind of music, kit, heads, room, and drummer?
I usually make my decision after hearing the instrument in the room.

I have (4) CAD M179s that I use primarily. (4) Beta 98s when space is limited. (3) TLM 103s when I run out of M179s.

Very well treated. I often will open the doors and put up room mics in the next room. Ambassador heads with clear resonant bottom heads, and I play with a pretty solid hit / feel.

Ever try M88’s?
160’s are pretty cool too and work great on guitar amps.

preferably - Oktava 219's. I like the modded ones best. If I want a more modern sound, I'll head to the CAD's mentioned above - the 177's or 179's. Beyond that, it's all the usual stuff that I'm not wild about using.

Yeah, Oktava 219's. But they’re pretty $$ now. I remember seeing them for cheaper. I did a few vocal sessions with one and I loved it.

I really like ksm 44s on toms. Pricey, but handy utility mics in general. Have always wanted to try the cheaper cardiod version.

Ever try M88’s? 160’s are pretty cool too and work great on guitar amps. Yet, I kinda want a side address for the space. Tired of the tall obtrusive tom mic. The less in common with the 421, the happier I will be!! Haha

I use e604's or M179's if micing individual Tom's.

Beyer M201s. Great on toms and much more affordable than M88s. This is assuming you're close micing, which I don't do anymore.

ATM25 and ATM230s. I like 604s on smaller toms.

Got an ATM25 from Japan for kick drum duties when my M88 broke and it’s great. I need to try it on toms, maybe I’ll go full ATM25!

I used MD421's, but they pick up a lot of bleed. The E604's are very convenient for placement and sounded good when the tom is hit. They do rattle though. So, the convenience of clipping of them is offset. I'd put them on stands. If I ever record a live drum set again I'd invest in great gates. Editing tom hits to silence the bleed when they are not hit is a pain in the ass.

I was excited to get three e904s last year during the $99 evolution sale, put them on toms for the first session, took them right back off and dragged the 421 stands out again. Got a pair of e906s in the same sale but haven't tried them on toms yet. If the 421s don't fit, I generally go to EV N/D408As. If I'm going for a flatter vintage sound I dig RE15s.

I got the ATM 230 three pack when I saw Jackpot post about it on instagram. I think they sound great and the bleed is very controlled. I have an ATM 25 that I use on floor tom sometimes and I don't notice a huge difference.
Otherwise I sometimes use RE20's on floor toms or if I'm really feeling wild I'll use my pair of M160's or a Stager SR2N.

It looks like these could be a step up for me.

ATM230's are nice. I noticed an improvement in how drums have been coming out overall since getting them, not just the toms themselves (also improved). I still manually gate them often, but the bleed is certainly a lot less and more tolerable than other mics I've tried, so it feels more optional now.
ATM25's are great too, but the advantage the 230's has over them is the size. 230's are easier to position optimally in tighter quarters.
