I remember(tracy)Korby really poo poo'd the Um70s I brought to him...he was a little like "why do you want to pay me to clean THIS thing?"

PS - I know EXACTLY how you feel. After Jim Williams told me to either off my piece of junk Gefell's (7) to some unsuspecting Ebay buyer, or toss em in the trash, I was OVERJOYED when I figured out the fix. So glad you got it working!! Jeeze. Jim has said some really outlandish stuff over the years, but damn, that almost takes the cake. haha! Yeah, I think maybe he was having a bad day, but it certainly bummed me out when he told me that. But after using the mics for a few months, I knew that he was wrong about them being junk, so I was on the hunt to find a solution, and I did, and they are some of the most used mics I have. . I don't even use the pigtail cables where I'm at now. Virtually no RF here.

Yeah, those ****ty Neumann M7 capsules, made like they made em in the 40's/50's....who would want to clean those up?? LOL. Gives a little perspective on Korby though....

(I need to swear off shootout threads, yikes.)

Probably cause I've been practicing TONS of Bee Gees/Franki Valli/Philip Bailey style Falsetto vocals. Thus interfering with the FCC Airwaves.
Better go back to Thurl Ravenscroft again, and be more low key. But that could get grrreaating.
I hope that goes away John (the microphone thing). Chris

Have you talked to Upton?

OK. you wiggled the ground wire and it was gone. For awhile.... so you know it's a ground issue. Have Dave sort it out.

Have you talked to Upton? Yeah - it’s such a hard issue to track down that they just can’t offer much help. Send it there for $100 and it doesn’t happen...bummer. It’s definitely to a point where no one would notice in the mix now. I’ll probably go wiggle again.

If the cable, see if Upton can send you another cable to try out.

Have him make you a new cable.

Have him make you a new cable. Well, it’s connected to the proprietary 251 connector housing, so it wouldn’t particularly be cheap. Guess I could ship it down and have him do it there.

If you want to send it to me, I'll put it on the oscilloscope and see what makes the RF go away. I don't have a lot of issues with RF at my house so I'm not sure that I'll see anything naturally, but I can give it a shot.

If you have a soldering iron you could re-heat the pins on the output of the mic, and inside the cable, in case any of them are intermittent. If wiggling solves things, It could be a possibility. Some people call this "chopsticking" when working on live electronics. Since you can't get zapped by poking around with a wooden implement. Be careful the PSU is not turned on when you're playing around inside the mic. It could also be a faulty wire or a solder joint somewhere north of the connector.
I would also recommend giving the XLR pins a good cleaning with some deoxit, or other contact cleaner. I had an SM7B of all things with dirty pins that was prone to noise until I figured it out. If the pin is corroded or dirty that could obviously affect the connection.
Just some ideas, good luck with it.

Just FYI, you all might already know this but it took me a while to fix my Rode Classic..
All circular screw-on multi-pin connectors are suspect IMO. When I used to work live we had to connect a 24 channel Whirlwind Circular connector snake each gig. The more you connect it, the more the rubber on the female side gets stretched out, some of the pins stop making contact. We'd lose channels every sound check, be running with XLR's, and often re-hooking up that 24 channel connector. The fix was always special technique when hooking up, and works on all circular connectors. Although the quick solution makes the problem worse over time.. so its best to connect right, and leave the cable connected IMO.
Here's how it works.. you slowly insert the connector so all the pins are deep. Its easy for male pins to be off-center and stab and tear the female rubber side, so be careful. Once the pins are all the way in, and before screwing: apply clockwise turn and hold the pressure so all the male pins are pushing against the walls on the female side. Not too much pressure, just enough to be certain there's good connection for all the pins. Hold that and screw her down. Not too tight, that twisting motion is what really stretches it out in the first place. If that fails, try again. Once it works, leave it connected. I celebrate with Crown Royal, and put the velvet bag over my mic (thanks JohnEpp). I had all kinds of weird issues until I started doing this.
edit: I hope this helps. The non-screwing multipin style should ideally be less prone to this, similar to XLR, but I'd still suspect pins making contact as first place to look when issues develop.

There’s a studio I work at on music row that has some serious RF problems, especially with Gefell microphones, but also tube mics.
The solution there are star quad microphone cables. If I use one, no issues, but if plug in a mic and I have noise, it’s because I grab any other kind of cable by mistake.
