My wife has pretty significant hearing issues, combination of hereditary congenital hearing loss and tour in Afghanistan. They do make frequency specific hearing aids that can be "tuned" to compensate for the individual, but sometimes hard to mask underlying tinnitus if severe. I know my wife's help a little but arent really effective once there's much background noise.

The disadavantages of advancing age: I recently turned 65 - however I developed cataracts in both eyes in my 40's - I was an artist/photographer. What did I do wrong? ?... I shifted into composing recording music over the past decade - and month by month develped increasing tinnitus.. I was not blasting my ears for years like some musicians do - but being the delicate flower I seem to be - have now this continuous beast hissing. I had an ear operation as well for another genetic disposition, doctor replaced the stapes bone in my right ear 4 years ago, but that did not slow down the tinnitus. It isn't mild. It isn't nice. The brain is one stubborn fu$ker when it comes to tinnitus.
So, 'Whatyougonnadoaboutit'... Not much.
In deep sleep one don't notice.
I figure still have enough pitch range left, and enough motivation, that I can keep learning - and keep making music - but I am probably missing nuances others hear - and I used to hear. Well, one keeps at it fiddling along regardless. - it's the Artist life.

Had a scary day yesterday. Woke up feeling like someone stuffed cotton in my left ear and it was HOWLING, much louder than usual, and a different frequency altogether. Immediately went to the doc. No infection, thankfully. She likened it to when you can't reset the pressure after flying. It did kinda feel like that, or when you get those sudden internal pressure changes and your ear rings super loud for just a few seconds... except it was a full day. Feels better today, but still not 100%. Scared the shit out of me.

Environmental noise . . .
Hard time tracking fingerstyle acoustic guitar parts last night. Why? Ears are still ringing.
Yesterday afternoon, I had to put a new drive belt on the mower deck of my ride on tractor (I have 2 acres of grass to mow), and I had to start it up and get a bird's ever view to check alignment. I was near the exhaust to complete this exercise . . . and of course, it was loud.
About 7pm last night, and still going strong this morning, everything from 4Khz up is ringing like Church Bells in my ears. Eff me tender. I have to remember to wear ear plugs when I'm not working.

I usually keep a set on me at all times, but last week I was using power tools to hang some shelving and fix a door and about an hour in I thought "why the hell am I not wearing earplugs right now?!". Had a solid ring for a day after that.

The high-C 8.3K ring in my ears is driving me BONKERS this morning . . . I keep hearing the harmonic on the end of Day In The Life.

I was laying in bed the other night listening to the high hiss in my ears, regretting all the stupid things I did in my youth that I thought was so rock 'n roll at the time. Being right up front with Soundgarden at Lollapalooza, right next to the giant speakers. I couldn't hear for days after that, but I wore it like a badge of honor. So dumb.
All those band practices with Fender amps laser beamed right at my ears. And the cymbals. So dumb.
And all those shitty gigs where we were cranked up so loud that I couldn't hear vocals, so I stood closer to the mains. So. Dumb.
I wish I could take it all back. Here I am at 42. Wonder how bad it'll be at 62...or 82?

Dude, I'm 55. It hasn't changed much in 30 years.
Today the high pitch ring is lowered to b6 8Khz.

I worry more about ear fatigue and diminished hearing now than I do tinnitus, although yes it is still there. I want to say this is the main danger of long hours in music, that and being too sedentary and/or isolated.
I can't even hear the EQ's I'm shooting out today, I'm so oversaturated from 2 weeks of solid working, the ears just don't care that much right now. Don't want to take a break but it will happen naturally. Think I'll watch some sports for a few hours.

That's a really good idea! Thanks mark. I'll use this warm sunny day for a little time outside. Based on experience the hungry ears will return after such a time out. I'm glad other people can spot this stuff, when I can't.

(And drink plenty of water - my ears get tired quicker when I'm dehydrated.)
