Cool idea. I would also compare it to the Bock 251. If I’m honest I always choose the Bock over the Tele when listening blind. It just has a bit more shimmer and deeper lows. I actually think the ADK 251 sounds pretty good on the samples here.

I actually think the ADK 251 sounds pretty good on the samples here. Took your advice tonight, Vinnie. Tried to match both the Tele and the Bock. Two interesting observations. 1) The ADK did not need much tweaking to get really close to either of them. 2) The settings for the two mics ended up almost identical. Just one slight frequency difference on one of the pots. (Probably shouldn't be surprised on point 1 as they are all "251s.) And while the tweaks were not major, the impact on the sound was to my ears. Again, I'm sure I don't have perfect matches, and the Electra can only do so much, but I'm really happy with what I'm hearing. Thanks for the suggestion!

I did a few big listening experiments when Audio Test Kitchen first debuted which included comparing all the 251s, 47s, etc. I came out with a favorites in each category, etc, but many were comparisons I had heard elsewhere before. I thought the ADKs were all really nice. Maybe not as nice at the FleAs, Telefunkens, Bocks, and a few others, but far better than many of the budget options; Warm, AA, Peluso, etc. Just my thoughts though. They are all useful tools. I made some great recordings with my Peluso 2247se when I had it.

Johnkenn, have you heard your new Upton next to a Bock or Tele? I haven’t. Here’s my experience with the Tele. They lent me one about 10-15 years ago. But it was one with a vintage ck12 and vintage ac701. It was unbelievably great. Haunting. Lol. So - That’s the only tele USA experience I have. And honestly, that wasn’t and isn’t what they’re selling. The only other experience I have is going to VK (in the last year) and listening to myself in their room to a stock Tele and a stock Upton. I thought the Upton sounded much thicker. Now - I will say this. I personally bought one of the first ten Upton’s. While I thought it sounded really good, I ultimately thought it sounded a little lite in the britches and somewhat sibilant. So, I paid Shannon to replace the capsule. That was a really good mic. Skip forward several years...a year or so ago. A friend of mine had a brand new one. Several people had been raving about their Uptons. My experience was that yes - it was good and for the price you could replace the capsule if you didn’t like it and still be $3k below a Tele. But he brought his up and I was like holy shit - this sounds soooo much bette than the one I initially bought. The deal was this - Dallas had gotten better at making the capsule. Imagine that? Lol. It was freaking amazing. So - I bought another one and put in a Mullard, but other than that - completely stock. It’s absolutely amazing. And to vouch for that, you can see that I haven’t posted a “I’m looking for another mic” thread since.

Yes, the most recent vocal clips I heard you do on the newest Upton sounded fantastic. (although we know John, you have a great voice to begin with! ) Chris

Makes sense. Oh if only someone out there could replicate the damn AC701k.
