67's all the way. The 251 is like having a bonus mic that may suit someone beautifully, but a pair of 67's is basically unbeatable.

Wonder how old it was? Or if it was a second...or it was used? Exactly my first thoughts.

Wonder how old it was? Or if it was a second...or it was used? Might have been his demo unit. I’m pretty sure Craig had one there when I went out to try the FleA 49.

Wonder how old it was? Or if it was a second...or it was used? It was built 3 months ago. I guess there was some sort of radio interference issue and had to be sent back to Dallas to fix, which they got back a few weeks ago.

I've loved C12's on OH. My fav of all time. Are the 251's close? Differences? I'm seriously contemplating a 251 for vox, but if I could get it to cover for 1/2 OH duty.....mmmmmm,,,,,,,uh, more excuses to buy it. (Them)

Well yes, it is my opinion , but that's what indiehouse asked for. I haven't had my hands on a 251, so I'm only speaking from my listening to tracks I know done with a 251. So my opinion is based on limited experience for sure. I remember reading of Glyn Jon using 67's as overheads and since I loved his recordings, it seemed a natural thing to want to duplicate. My opinion might change if I spent some serious time with a 251. I remember using a vintage C-12 that was astonishing, but the 67 just worked better for my voice. Indie's question leaves room for interpretation. A pair of 67's could prove more useful for him than one 67 and one 251, even if the 251 was great. But only he can answer that.

Obviously a different more smiley face vibe to a 67 midrange although I always felt a little more weight in the 251 mids than a c12. I had a pretty nice sounding Telefunken USA 251 a few years back that was fkn great for mono overhead. Don’t come across many 251 pairs in home spots. Although the Upton mics are probably changing that. That said I have an amazing pair of C12a’s that are over drums as I type.funny I sold a pair of 414ebs for $5400 then the same week bought the c12a’s from a friend for $4200. But yeah if you like c12’s on drums you’ll be stoked

Never clean a loaded gun, and always keep the 67.

Never clean a loaded gun, and always keep the 67. I think you misspelled M269, but I love my one lonely U67! And with the right vintage tube, an amazing microphone for a multitude of applications. Anyhow, glad you made it back in from the ledge, Indie!!

That is after I get a first. LOL I think 67's on OH are not for me. Love them for VOX though.

Here’s my OH choice experience with my rough thoughts and categorizations:
C12As (full! with a gorgeous top end) - Rock/Country Upton 251s (more sparkle-y, less low-end) - Pop Coles 4038s (fat) - Rock Wunder CM7S (full and detailed) - Americana
Here’s a tune I did with C12As on OHs...most of the drum sound is coming from the OHs.

Please report back!! Many thanks. Right now my Gefell's are getting the OH done, but they don't have the sweet open sound of C12's. I need to try my KM53's a bit more on OH as well. Yours and Spindrift's OH descriptions have me excited though....,.

I preordered a Stam 251. It has all the right parts. Not terribly excited aesthetically. Upton has got the looks. Sounds ridiculous, I know. But the Upton just looks like it oozes vibe and class. BUT, I am a gear nerd (to a fault), and to anyone else it wouldn’t make a difference. Especially not a $3k difference.
Be interesting to compare these two mics when the Stam is delivered in a couple years...if I don’t end up building one first.

I was super pleased with the vocal sound too...big grins all around that session!

I feel exactly the same, Stam is not as hot looking as the Upton but insides seems very promising. Upton obviously sounds amazing and looks great but is too expensive for me. I preordered a Stam, hoping that it will get some use as I often record female ballads/folk/jazz-vocals. ETA is December 2019 I believe.

John has been more than helpful both here and offline. Just really hard for me to justify the expense as a one-man show, and no one is going to see it but me. I should be receiving an ADK Z-Mod 251 next week to demo. Will probably be posting some clips on the other thread (Calling ADK users). I don't have anything big-time to compare against, but will shoot out against the Vanguard V13 and maybe the Luke Audio AL-Y56 and/or Peluso 2247SE. This will be vocals only likely through my MA5.
