Came across this guy selling a mic cover product. Not sure what material he's using, but it's a very expensive bag at $25 USD. Still, might be worth it if you want to leave your mics up on the stands often. www.themiccover.com/Any similar products you'd recommend?

Me too. Microfiber is breathable and leaves no residues.

Twist tie plastic storage bag with a cloth bag over it if using cheap plastic bags embarrass you.

It might actually be worth it if instead they had a choice of outer fabrics or something cool/interesting/entertaining, and it would actually be a good value if for $25 they would embroider your choice of words on it.

This is actually an interesting topic. I was thinking on this just yesterday. I was sent a couple of small mic socks from Blackspade when I had the UM-17R. I still use them when I'm going to track and have the mic set up but am waiting to use it. When I leave them out, I've just used a plastic bag. I suppose a mic sock with a plastic bag over it oughta do it. But then, I wonder if they're just some random material and do in fact leave fibers on the grill that could reach the capsule.
There would need to be a way to find out what kind of material has the least fiber residue to make an informed decision. I like covering my gear. I sold an Apollo once that I'd used only at my apartment. The guy who bought it sent it to be modded and BLA and they said it was the dirtiest Apollo they'd ever seen. That was strange because I covered it often, but now I always cover my gear unless I'm using it. Perhaps NYC is dirtier than other places.
One thing I found interesting is that I'd been to some studios that had their mics in an actual mic locker, all in their cases. Another studio just put them in a drawer without covers, where they could easily bang into each other. Then another big studio I used simply left all their mics in the corner uncovered. I'm talking vintage 47's, 67, 87's, etc. So there seems to be a variety of approaches to caring for mics, some are meticulous, some careless.
One thing I've wondered, I remember being told to cover a mic before turning it off. I think they meant this as a precaution for mics when using phantom power, but I'm not sure. The reasoning was he static electricity sucked in air particles when power gets shut down. I sometimes do this, sometimes I forget, but I have no idea if it's superstition or science.
So.. maybe I'll research which fiber has the least residue when I have some free time..
Anyone here have any info on that?
$15 isn't unrealistic for a nice cover if the style works for you. It might give a studio a classy look and subconsciously send a message to people that you take good care of things. M57, that''s a cool idea of offering some customization. A studio name or logo could be cool. If they can stick "The Mic Cover", perhaps they could just as easily stick something else for a small fee. A color choice would be nice too.

Being a computer dork I use the antistatic bags from when you buy motherboards and video cards etc.
Basically a nice quality plastic bag but some slight paranoia makes me think you could get more static build up on regular plastic bags especially in the wintertime and mics contain some delicate electronics that could be affected by random static discharge.
Another thought of mine is that any kind of cloth cover will shed unseen small bits of fiber and you don't want that stuff getting into a mic anywhere near the capsule so I don't like the idea of cloth covers all that much.
first post here I kind of found out about RGO from the UAD forums, I have been lurking/reading a few threads and enjoying the sharing of knowledge/experience and general friendly attitude - cheers - Matt

Will plastic bags, ziplock etc trap moisture though?
Cheers, Geoff

Well if the guy is reading this, they’d do way better if it had some sort of protection from falls and bumps. Like foam or other something? My mic is a little off center due to a fall while not at the studio. Not sure what happened.. figured a partner let someone in. Or did a rat sneak in and climb up the boom? Glad I’m not there anymore.

Always used the plastic "crack bags". Of course. I mean, what else are you gonna do with them? Throw them out? Bad for the environment. And after your mics don't need them, you can store your sideways spindled rotting teeth in them!

Plastic looks like crack ..er, I mean crap. What the product needs to be is plastic on the inside and a nice cozy padded fabric on the outside ..so clients think you're serious about taking care of your microphones. ..Oh and don't forget the logo/cool brand name.

How are sunglass bags going to cover my big tube mics? Most sellers provide measurements. Mine fit my CV4 fine.

I put my Avantone BV-12 in it's little wooden box. I took it out months later, and the dye of the felt had leached into the beautiful buttercream finish. Nothing could clean it up, so the paint is now dull and has faint purple stripes. So... it could be something a nice looking mic cover might do to a mic.

So guys does this mean that, if I use Crown Royal bags for storage...
I can make now that huge tax deduction then? This could be THEE hidden cash cow for studios! I mean if you compare streaming revenue, to just all the empty bottle recycling dollars alone? Put that together and hello 401 Proof-I mean 401K. Chris

Thanks chessparov, it was a bummer. The finish was so classy. If I ever mod the BV-12, perhaps with a Tim Campbell capsule, I'll find a way the get a new mic body or have that one refinished. I put plastic over any mic before I store them in the mic boxes now.
