The cool thing when you don't have a Commercial Studio or active Project Studio... Is that you can find the individual vocal mic, that suits you specifically.
Like $7000 Pro budget could = U67 Reissue. For me (right now) $7000 budget = U99 + TG + Tonelux JC37 FET + Heiserman H47 FET + Sontronics Sigma 2 ribbon. Chris EDIT: A custom/semi custom condenser, is always on the radar too!

Yeah, for other than a collector, it's just not worth the going price IMO. There are great alternatives, and the differences are minimal. Evenmoreso with the current "state-of-the-art" laptop speakers. I don't mix for "laptop speakers" or f-ing earbuds. If people want to use those it's their own damn fault (or they're just trying to drown out the even worse noise from the bar's jukebox, which I am guilty of). I mix for people who have decent stereos, or at least listen in cars with stereos as good as the ones in my (former) 2016 Prius or my new RAV4 (which doesn't have a damn CD player. Hope the one I ordered from Amazon works in the car....)
I do not understand why any engineer would deliberately mix for degraded quality equipment. If your mix is good it will sound good anywhere - if it's mixed for a degraded system it will sound good nowhere, just different versions of "bad" depending on the playback.
/diversion
Welcome to music today. There is no greater frustration than destroying a really good mix, because your client is convinced that people will be listening to it on their phones and doesn’t understand why the bass won’t cut through on their iPhone. So, you find a mid-ground between the good mix and what is needed for the bass and such to cut through on a phone. Happened to me recently. I gave them what they wanted and the good mix, and told them they were wrong. I think they used the crap mix. It is what it is. SMH.

Since I don't rely on mixing for income (don't want to be at the mercy of the dollar in selecting what I work on) I have no problem with suggesting politely that someone find another engineer to mix their stuff.
But then I also am not really interested in mixing stuff I don't track.
And, as Jimi Hendrix once said, "I don't live today."

I started this thread back in June and learned a lot in the process--thanks for all of your input! I installed a new "better" capsule in my Miktek but that didn't do it for me. So I pulled the trigger on a Signal Art Premium u48 (the figure 8 pattern has more uses for me than the omni u47.) I've only had it for a day and have done only minimal recording so far, but if first impressions matter I'm VERY excited about what I'm hearing. As we know, there are pluses and minuses in dealing with a small one man operation, but my experience with Chad was top notch and all on the plus side. He answered all of my questions and concerns and then some--always within a day. No delays. No hidden costs. No misunderstandings. There are a handful of boutique gear builders that really know how to communicate and meet the needs of the customer. Chad is one of those guys. I'll weigh in more later. But right now? Couldn't be happier!

I’d love to hear some samples. Chad is a really nice and knowledgeable guy, but there isn’t much in regards to samples of his microphones.

I've been bugging Chad for quite some time, and he is always responsive, patient, and helpful even though I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Really interested in any samples you can share, specifically on male vox if possible.

Well cdkelly, if you can afford to loan me a couple of demo units for a week or two I would be glad to make a couple of videos with them....

I’d love to hear some samples. Chad is a really nice and knowledgeable guy, but there isn’t much in regards to samples of his microphones. I'm swamped at the moment but will try to get to this within a few weeks. With large ticket gear items like Chad's mic I'm a little reticent to post samples online. It seems to give everyone (including myself at times!) the opportunity to take potshots at it, especially when the goal is to approximate vintage gear. I know that's the risk that boutique builders take on, but I'm not eager to enter the fray and debate someone who might own multiple vintage German mics why he thinks nothing new measures up. When I record a sample I may just share it here through private messaging. I too had not heard Chad's u48 before buying it. But I did communicate with those that own them, and Chad does have a return policy and is very eager to please the customer. Also, $1900 covered everything including tax, shipping, a Gotham XLR cable, and backup tubes. I'm not trying to persuade anyone--just sharing what my experience was and what a comfort and pleasure it is to have the Signal Art mic in my studio.

Well cdkelly , if you can afford to loan me a couple of demo units for a week or two I would be glad to make a couple of videos with them.... Hi Vincent, I may be able to do that for you in a couple weeks (sometime after AES), if you'd like to do that. I finally have a head start on building some loaner units. I just got my 'benchmark' U47 back from Audio Test Kitchen after quite a few months (that will be up soon on their site, I'm told) and tomorrow am delivering it to the studio at my former employer for a couple weeks of testing (they are courteous enough to try out my mics in their studio as clients and schedule permit). Right now, I'm building a test mic right now for Ryan Earnhardt at Creative Sound Lab to check out, and when I get that back, I can try to get it your way for a little while. Thanks for the kind words, Lorne! Chad

It sucks, but every year I’m always crazy busy with performances during Italian History Month and I miss AES. Otherwise I’d love to come meet you and grab a cup of coffee or something while you’re in the city. Don’t know if I can make it happen though. If you can send me a loaner I’ll run it through some vocal stuff and throw up a video. Working on two new videos right now as we speak. Lol.

Just in case folks don't know, I co-founded a new company called United Studio Tech back in 2017 that aims to make high end mics (mostly of the German classic mic variety), and these will be actually available through most music retailers worldwide. We finally went public before AES and announced our first product. The FET47 is our first announced product and it should be out by year's end. I've worked hard at making the mic affordable without compromising any quality aspects at all. www.unitedstudiotech.com

Chad, will you guys have-or share a booth with another vendor-at NAMM? Thanks, Chris We will indeed be at Winter NAMM! We are guests of our global distributor, RAD Distribution, and will be inside their booth. I think they have a double wide space. I don't know the booth location yet; but it will be in the pro audio building. I'll post more as I find out. Hopefully also showing something new! Now, I have to figure out where I'm staying. Cool! Hopefully you'll get a room with a VU. (sorry, couldn't resist). You know over at any of the Buddhist forums, you can't post pictures there either. NO attachments allowed. Chris

I’d love to hear the difference between the United and the Heiserman FET. Especially since Heiserman is making their capsules.
The zip tie in the video holding the transformer makes me cringe though.

I dig the United logo. It's always hard to make a classic looking logo with some originality. Affordable mic options these days seem so much better than when I first started getting into recording.
