FYI the original 3 band passive lustra equipped Helios modules were called “0011” modules. Tony Arnold (R.I.P.) jazzed it up re-labeling/marketing the new re issues as the “Type 69” which does sound way sexier!

Wow didn't know Tony Arnold passed away, very sad Rip, I seen him post on gearslutz.. No wonder i coudnt find any inventory online or was wondering why they went out of business.. Oh he named it type 69, never knew that. I'm hoping stam can recreate as good as what they did with 1073. Will be an awesome product

One feature I wish Stam would add to his pre's is a signal present LED, or a green-yellow-red level LED. Just for numbskull engineers like myself.

Hi Stam, could you add a signal present LED to your single rack space preamps? If it didn't cost a lot, I'd pay the difference in price.

We all know the issues. Before the virus. Now? I’m guessing supply chain issues may delay a lot of manufacturing. Sooooo ...
Cheers, Geoff

If I knew I could get this in a month, I’d pay now. I would be inclined to pull the trigger if it were in stock now. I like the audioscape business/distribution model. I also really love my Stam SA2a, and a couople of other pieces. And am sold on the Helios sound with regards to recording guitar amps. WAY over the API 312. An 'in-stock update' would be awesome, please.

I order some Dell laptops in Feb, their ship date just got updated to mid-May, and that still feels optimistic. Hoping this house of cards doesn't finally drop.

I've heard high praise for helios on forums but never heard it. What's so special about it? Any famous songs I can check out. With all this new technology, are the helios still superior?

I love the top end and especially the 10khz shelf. Also, seems to have a little more body in the lower mids than API or Neve. Nice midrange selections for vocal and guitar too. The reissues - and originals from what I’ve heard - don’t have a lot of headroom...and the distortion isn’t pleasing in my estimation. But when you get the gain staging right, they’re great. Nothing is magical about them (or really any pre) but they’re a great tool.

When did Olympic get their Helios boards? Early 70s?
Cheers, Geoff

I read somwherr on Gearsluts if one was making one, by raising the voltage to 32v can fix the headroom issues. I almost pulled the trigger with stam but end up ordering 73. I was getting into habbit of collecting too many pres..I need a nice mic instead

Technically Olympic never had Helios boards, they had 'Olympic boards', and later Raindirk in the mid 70's.
The 1st Olympic board is dated as far back as the mid 60's and was built by the inhouse tech Dick Swettenham who later went on to be Mr Helios and build other consoles for Island records, Stones Mobile, etc from 69' onwards.

I had a quick look at Howard Massey’s British studios book, and looks like although they had Swettenham designed desks they were pre Helios as a name. It does say they had a Helios in studio two pre the Raindirk. I always associated Helios and Olympic, but apparently I was wrong. Chris Blackwell had a bunch, same with Branson. Cheers, Geoff

I wouldn't classify them as clean, but also not super colored if you don't push them too much. They can give you lots of mojo, but I'd say it's a little more of a finesse thing to dial in that a typical 1073 clone. Here's an auction description of a console that was just sold last year. It now lives in a studio in Brooklyn and I know they are pretty happy with it. www.bonhams.com/auctions/24669/lot/86/

Cheers, Geoff I believe Blackwell or maybe Branson actually provided the funding to Swettenham, because they wanted a console similar to the Olympic desk. By investing in his company, Swettingham could leave Olympic, who didn't seems to want to get into the console business. As I understand it, the RSM desk was the closest to the Olympic deck, including the 4db steps in the 10K high EQ.
