I can't hear the tracks unless I accept Google's terms for the Google player. So, all of you are OK with it? I'm skeptical about signing on with them.

I usually use my Chromebook (Google based), and never have had any concerns with Google Player FWIW. I think you'll be fine. Chris

So at the risk of sounding like a shill - and yes, I can sell you one of these - I’m completely blown away by this mic. Dallas has obviously dialed the capsule making process in, because this is better than the one I made all the “upgrades” to.

This is why Todd's recent question, about the ADK version, is a tough question. For an enthusiast like me, I'm confident I'd be very happy with the Z-251. But the more anyone (or me for that matter), are towards the Commercial Pro Zone...
Making release level recordings, or pitching Song Demos, that'd push them towards the Upton. Shoot I like it better, than the U67 RI! Making me rethink my general "251 evaluation". Chris

anyone ever get to hear the analog anonymous version? he says the capsule is more "vintage" tuning and nos GE and diff output cap. but after a couple years [and prolly a lot of feedback]and hearing these samples here it seems Dallas has the tuning really dialed in now.

I’d say @johnkenn’s new samples sound like another level to me than the experience I had with the analog anonymous version. I’d go with the new stock one.

Dallas will tune it however you want straight from the factory...and honestly, I thought the GE 5 Star was bright when I tried one in the past. I guess I should start telling Dallas to tune it like “1967”, but an NOS tube and sell it for an upcharge.

If you HAVE to have an exact Neumann U47 tube mic sound, you have to have an original U47. (I'm a fan of many "inspired by" microphones BTW) But otherwise IMHO, we're living in the golden age of vocal microphones-right now. (as I hide my wallet!) Chris

I’m not really sure if Neumann cared if it was the VF14 if they had had access to different tubes...

When Klaus' avatar is a VF-14 Licence Plate. Hmm... methinks it has significance in that alone! Paging Klaus now ... Chris

You're probably right...older designs do seem to have made decisions based on quality and performance without any regard to cost. Maybe in 1948 or whatever the VF14 was the penultimate tube...no idea. I don’t pretend to be any kind of expert concerning 80 year old tubes...aren’t there glass tubes inside the metal can?

The old metal tubes don't have glass inside of them, no, they are actually a "metal tube." Thee geek in me wants to think that this has got to be a part of the sound somehow.

Just like I might wish sometimes, I had a time machine in my younger days, to go back and woo a gorgeous Screen Goddess-Like Gene Tierney or Susan Hayward...
I suppose us Microphone Geeks, need at least one beautiful "pin-up" Uobtainium LDC microphone to fantasize about!

Both feel pretty different to me. The 251 has that sizzle that 251's are know for. But isn't over the top on your voice which is great.
Great mic's though.

They both sound really, really good, but the Upton's the best choice here, IMO. You sound really great on it, Johnkenn.

I’m not really sure if Neumann cared if it was the VF14 if they had had access to different tubes... A few weeks ago I was wondering same thing and why we can't remake the VF-14? and found this: repforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php?topic=34815.0I learned a great deal, it looks like it was a custom tube specifically for U47 and that's the only reason it was made.

Oliver Archut's comments here mention the non-M VF14s being slated for use in what I assume to be radios made for the domestic market in Germany: repforums.prosoundweb.com/index.php?topic=2414.0

I had been using the Mullard 12AT7 in my Upton for months...thought I'd put the EH back in to see the difference. In one of these threads I think I had mentioned I didn't know which I liked better...well, damn - I much prefer the Mullard.

A good Mullard just adds a presence which sounds refined .
