Been doing "some study" of two of the greatest singer/songwriters, Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot. In my research travels...
As you can see for yourself-in the Mixonline article "Classic Tracks":Jim Croce's Time In A Bottle, they started using an RE15 on Jim's (brighter) Gibson Dove. They would use either a 47 or 87 on Maury's Martin acoustic. (I think an EV 635a, ala Alabama Shakes, can sound cool too)
I thought it was interesting how Gordon Lightfoot must have influenced Jim & Maury, regarding the dual acoustic guitar set up. (as some of you may know, the late great Terry Clements was with Gordon for around 40 years!)
Interested in your comments/insights on all this. I'm thinking of trying to put together a small Pro band, based on the dual acoustic guitar "thang".
But...
I'm also going to start a thread in the "Off Topic" forum, regarding these two great artists, and others like them! Thinking of titling it... "Can great Story Songs (and their singers) make a Comeback"? (Americana? Country Music? etc.) See I know how to use "gear for bait"! (but I'm genuinely curious about the EV microphones, on acoustic)
Thanks in advance for your responses, Chris

There was an ‘off radar’ mics article in the 90’s that referenced RE-15/16 having a ‘u87-like’ midrange. A pair of RE-16 were my first decent mics and consequently I’ve never had much use for SM57/58. I’ll take them over the average asian condenser most days. Lots of Elvis tracks using RE-16 apparently. When i hear old tracks i cut with those, i’m never unhappy. Vocals, guitars, drum OH, etc.

I played on a record once where the other guitarist and I did a lot of dual tracked acoustics and the engineer put some funny lookin little dynamics on us and when we threw the cans on and started playing we looked at each other and were like, “Dude...what are these mics??” They sounded awesome.
I’ve always meant to pick one or two up. The other guitarist on that session did buy one. Uses it to this day I believe.

Oh well, the cat's been out of the bag, on RE-15's, for a while now. Chris

Yeah they've gotten quite a bit more expensive.

Yeah they've gotten quite a bit more expensive. Pawnshop’s and patience my friend! Seriously! The funny thing is in my youth they were everywhere so much so that I never appreciated them and couldn’t wait to use other mics, move on to adulthood and it was like a revaluation!

I've got a few RE10/11/15/16s in my mic locker and frequently use them where many people would reach for a 57. They're all essentially the same mic, except that the 15 and 16 have the more elaborate elongated ball pop filter.

EV 667a is a killer on electric guitar. They aren't cheap anymore.

EV 667a is a killer on electric guitar. They aren't cheap anymore. Nope, and anything that gets mentioned here quickly skyrockets in price too. So . . I have a quartet of EV 408s and a EV308 I'd like to offload. . . so how do we go about hyping those?

They are a better sounding mic than the current market value, but they just don’t get any love any more. I think the stupid removable rubber handle cover on the handheld N/D series mics took the value of the whole series down because everybody lost them! Now the old EV dynamic must have is the DS 35 the Non variable -D version of everybody’s favorite RE’s for when proximity effect is a good thing.

Blows The desire for Walmart prices can’t have them and decent wages, we collectively made the wrong long term choice, but we sure do have a hell of a lot of crap! BUT consider this for thought it was Levi Strauss not the military build up that brought down the USSR, and seeing all the cool stuff they were making for Americans that completely changed Japan, so maybe consumerism could change China, it’s a theory.

Proximity effect? Isn't that always and/or never a good thing? Yes! I have one of those DS 35s, pretty special on electric guitar. Need to find more spots for it, really haven't had time to experiment enough.

I haven't grabbed and re-15 yet but this thread did prompt me to grab a nice old re-50 (635a with better handling isolation). $50 why not? I'll use it for something. I do love weird old dynamics.

I have:
RE20 x 1 RE15 x 2 RE10 x 1 635a x 1 664 x 1
They're all useful and I'd like another RE20 as well as one or two more RE15s.
Now, y'all stop talking about them, at least until I pick a few more up.

Will do. At least a new RE16, puts a cap somewhat on the price. Chris

I do like EV mics generally, but I must be the only one who never liked the RE-20.

An RE-20 is also good in a pinch on an acoustic guitar.

I used to snipe them on ebay for $30-40 bucks per mic. Not any time recently. Mine keep dying as well. I had a DS35, RE18, and RE15 all die quietly in the past couple of years, just sitting in their cases. My remaining collection is 635A x2 (room mics primarily on drums) RE11 (currently mid mic in a mid/side drum room setup, with MXL R80 ribbon as the side mic) also fine on acoutsic guitars RE18 x2 - sometimes these are wonderful on guitar cabinets 660 the chrome one, I stick it inside the kick drum sometimes. I used to own a PL6 which was a great guitar amp mic I also have some "new" ones PL80c - great for band rehearsal PA vocals, less mud than SM58 ND868 - my first "good" kick drum mic, haven't used it in years. Sort of natural sounding compared to more hyped kick mics. CO4 - my secret weapon tom tom mic, I have four of these. Also good on guitar cabinets. Got them super cheap. Sold but want back eventually RE20 - bass cab mic of doom, utitilty vocal or guitar mic, acoustic or electric PL6 - why did I sell this Sold and don't want back ND468 - sorry WardPL84 handheld condenser mic - OMG pure trash, laughably poor those weird rubber handle ones - nope Guess I am an EV fanboi. My first mic was an SM58, my second good mic and first vintage mic was the RE11, which was a gift from a family friend. Add some $150 condensers, AT3035 and SP B1, and that was my first many years of recording.
