No offense taken; ideas are worthless if not explored.
Here's my idea. Every person's life is equally precious. Every person's time is therefore equally valuable.
To assign a higher value to one person's labor is completely arbitrary. All should get paid the same, or it's not fair.
Better yet, forget money. There are far better ways. But I digress.
If we don't start seriously entertaining new, even radical ideas, S.S. Humanity will sink. It already is.

Man, I just couldn't read every line of these posts, because the actual question bugged me so much. If someone can charge $10 an hours for services, clearly, it's for other reasons than income. Maybe he wants to build a reputation, maybe get his chops together before raising prices, maybe he's a wanna be and that's the only way he can get people interested, who knows. Swurveman, I've enjoyed your posts, so I can offer you this, don't become an ambulance chaser, find your passion, and make it work on your terms. There is no actual competition if what you do is unique in some form. The real difficulty is differentiating yourself from the herd. Are you actually better than most others at your price point? If you are, prove it. Get a great band, record a great song or two, bust your balls on it for beer money, but post it everywhere, send it to bands, show it to people, and things will happen. If you do it really well, people will come. Good luck. That said, I'm trying to figure out my own version of this dilemma. Recently I was paid $300 for a job I would have gotten over $4,000 for in the late 80's, and I was glad for the work. Where this will land, I don't know, but without proper copyright protection, all the arts will fail soon. My friend had 1.6 million downloads of his song and got a $45 check. Until those streaming services are required to pay a fair royalty, the dream may be over for most of us. Old, old thread, but MAN did you hit the nail on the thumb! Intellectual property value has gone down the shitter since youtube and Napster. I feel like Steve Jobs and iTunes sold out every artist with their freaking $0.99/song model (they make $0.20 of that!). It's like the value of human ingenuity and creativity is reduced to nothing. And why shouldn't it? There are a gazillion people on the planet now, growing population by the hour. All want money and fame and fortune. And computers and the internet and AI are coming for our livelihoods and our jobs. And still we cling to this amusement-park-like societal structure using "money" to exchange goods and services. This was and has always been a system of enslavement, and never before has it become so obvious that this system itself is what is failing. It simply doesn't work. Until we get hip to the concept that EVERY person's labor has equal value - because every person should have equal value - humanity will struggle. I am a fan of Ubuntu Contributionism. Great book on Amazon by Michael Tellinger. Until we solve the world's problems, DO please carry on writing and producing fabulous soul-expanding music.

Hey all, just a quick shout to say I'm still waiting on the microphone from Andreas. I will post back here when it's complete. He actually sent me a message about a week ago that it was just about done, so it should be soon.
Peace

I really love my Kawaii MP9 Stage Piano. Real wood keys and hammer action. Pretty lovely piano sound too. I think mine was 1500 - 1800; can't remember it's been a few years...

Some say that this was really a PR move on her behalf anyway. Hard to know. The business is so murky now with streaming having eroded sales, and artists getting paid with such a lack of transparency on the part of the labels...Let's put it this way: she isn't hurting for money, and it's easy to vow to go on a diet when your belly is full.

Its simple: Writers, musicians, journalists, photographers etc. don't have the lobbying money to make Congress do anything to help us. We are a country of and for corporate interests and both political parties have bought into this. They represent the interest of Apple/Microsoft/Google and there is nothing stopping this unless by some miracle the entire population starts demanding that money and politics do not belong together. Won't happen. Our whole system worldwide runs on money. HTF did that happen? It's a terrible model for human interactions, pitting greed and heartlessness into the core of EVERYTHING we do on this planet save religious pursuits. --And even then...but don't get me started...
The very economic model of using money guarantees this sort of thing will happen. It's a lot less about politics and a lot more about the economic model we have.
I really don't know what would work better. People only do things to "get" things.
Imagine if we all just did what we wanted to do? Anarchy? Perhaps. Is there something in-between? Sigh.

He takes the time to talk on the phone with total compleat newbie morons like me, about microphones. He's sent me free parts. He hand-held me through understanding some things that I now regard as simple. He's the real deal. I hope he makes a lot of money!

Yeah, Andreas is the greatest gentleman ever! He inspires people to be good, just by being so incredibly awesome himself. As someone in another forum said, we need to protect people like this...So glad you had a great experience with him! Can't wait to get my microphone back from him too!

I think when you reach a certain level of quality you could stop thinking about the gear and more about the music. In this case I think you can count on it that the mic will be that good. When it comes to Neumann mics Andreas knows his stuff. I have 10+ mics here that he serviced and the Voxorama U47. Lovely tools. But again *they* don't create the magic, the music and performers do. In my not anymore so very humble opinion :-) Point taken. Gear lust takes on a life of its own, and can eclipse the music making itself. But I still have a passion for great gear!

What I like the most about the D4 is how the lowest level nuances are clean and clear. I sing differently with it. Because I trust it will capture the subtleties, it that helps me produce a better vocal take, one where I lay low when it feels right. I'm trying to decide if I wanna DIY a REDD47, or just cave in and get the D4. I'm sure there's advantages to both.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel their hard work and IP should be whored out for free?> Do writers have their books simply streamed to readers? Do farmers have their produce simply shipped to grocery stores for free? How about software developers? Should they have to give away their music for free? Ok maybe not exactly free, but close to it? We're getting reamed here. The only ones making any money are the ones distributing our works. While they brazenly continue to complicate the "laws" and rules for how money is distributed. More complicated = F over more songwriters and little guys. I've often said, "The first hands the money goes through, gets the lion's share of it." Sigh. This just isn't right. Attachments:

Yeah - share a pic. Always heard fantastic things about Grosser. You know what? He's a real gentleman! I mean, old-school kind, trusting, and all-around great guy! He's even sent me some parts for free, even though I offered to pay for them. He said he would send me both a VF14EF and a VF14ER, and just send him back the one I don't want. I'll probably keep both for future clones. FYI the EF is his FET circuit, and the ER is his glass tube version. I hear amazing things about both of them. I'm certain there is "something" to the myth (legend?) that only a real VF14 will make a U47 sound right, but I'm also certain there's something to be said for a substitube (get it? tee hee!) operating at correct voltage/bias can still sound amazing... Or at least that's what I tell myself. I could get a real VF14, but I'm just not sure it's worth the cash. What do you guys think?

BTW I just read a post by Oliver at the Neumann forum wherein he said the internals of a UF14, EF14 and VF14 are identical save for filament. Quoting him: '"The VF14 is identicle to the EF14 and UF14 with a different fillament current. There is also the VF15 the remote cutoff version of the VF14 and connected as a triode it works great. Only problem the pin connection is a bit different so you have to change the socket..." From www.neumann.com/forums/view.php?bn=neumann_archive&key=974359437&v=fMan, I never met the guy, but what a loss!!!

I was so carefully watching my hands in front i didn't think about the back of the capsule my finger slipped into - didn't even feel it! I had to give myself permission a long time ago to F things up...I literally had this clone in parts for 3-4 years but was too afraid to screw it up. Well, I did! But whatever was actually wrong with it, I don't know! I'll keep you guys up to date once I get more news. I'm really excited about this anyway. So it's not all DIY; yeah I got a savior! Funny thing is, when I first decided to make this clone, I had spoken with Andreas. I wanted to buy his VF14EF "tube" for the clone. He said he didn't sell them separately, then sold me on the idea of using an EF12K circuit with a schematic he supplied. He said a properly operating tube would give an amazing microphone, so don't worry so much about not having a real VF14 (surely there's wisdom here!). Funny how our intentions have a funny way of circuitously showing up, innit? I'm ready to pass the screwup crown onto the next poor schmuck. Any takers?

Yeah good points b1. I just read recently that there's a hotel that has a robot bellhop. A ROBOT bellhop! Ok, cool you say, you don't have to tip it and it won't drop your luggage? It can carry a lot? I say, there's 2-3 bellhops out of a job! That one robot can probably work 24/7 without a brea or complaint (ok I'm sure there's maintenance downtime but...you get the idea...) I for one am not very happy with the direction all of society is going with all the automation. It won't stop at bellhops. Then it'll be the checkin people, perhaps eventually the maids, etc. What will "regular folk" do when their jobs are taken over by legal mechanical immigrants? And THAT is why I don't like the new Sonar. (kidding!) Like the self check lanes at the grocery store. Only need 1 person to man 4 lanes with those rather than 1 or 2 (if there is a bagger) per lane. I always stick with the traditional lanes and try to save some jobs. Yeah, awesome bro!

Wow! What an eye-opening article!!! Thanks donr!
What hope is there for single-person songwriters now? The money is taken out of it, and the artists are not going to want songs that aren't written by teams of experts. I feel like putting my drum in the closet now and only playing for me. Sniff.
No, really.

Well I overall like it. But as I said, to me, the marketing has gotten the best of them and it seems very confusing. You have to spend a fair amount of time figuring it all out.
And as stated, some of their plugs are rather poor; left a bad taste in my mouth.
I guess that's the price we pay for the new software model of renting vs. owning; so many companies are going towards that now.
Thanks for your thoughts.
