Chris Stone told me that they ONLY bought second-hand gear for Record Plant and leased the tape machines and consoles.

The "secret" is recording live with everybody listening to each other using no headphones or stage monitors to screw up the dynamics!

Digidesign was also on the edge of going under! Avid also moved so much of Digidedign's staff to their own top management positions in Baahhhstn' that it looked like Digidesign had actually bought Avid! Of course NeXt had bought Apple which was really why Steve Jobs was back.

Buffett is fascinating because he started his own label and concealed its sales figures to keep competition away. Then Garth Brooks bumbled into his fanbase with "Friends in Low Places" and it blew up the charts.

I've been doing everything at 96k for eight years. Spotify has been talking about supporting 96k streaming for some time.

The secret is that she doesn't try to add fans. She tries to maintain a high quality relationship with them and could really care less about anyone else.

I ordered from Pro Tools PC who built my previous machine back in 2015. Before that, I had a Dell Precision and my first had been built by my friend Pat Duran in San Francisco who mostly built custom mike preamps.

My new 13900k PC arrives Friday.I've been using an Intel mac mini for the past couple of months. It has reminded me of my original love/hate relationship with Macs which was why I got a PC rather than moving on to mac system neXt and more planned obsolescence. I was expecting xp to be way harder to learn and navigate than it turned out to be. I installed Pro Tools and my plugins in about a half hour and was laughing myself silly.

Taylor Swift is doing exactly what Jimmy Buffet did with his Parrotheads 30 years earlier.

I heard Glynn Johns say the whole point with his original setup was simply to duplicate what a band was used to experiencing on stage in a club at that time. This was before recording rock bands was common and before stage monitoring became common.

I think the relative lack of success most DIY recordings have is exactly where AI recordings will go. I've never forgotten Steve Cropper telling me "back to the top, I started thinking!"

I'm surprised I didn't say this before. What is critical is that you are recording exactly whatever you or others are hearing. That means if you are recording with a direct box, you want to be listening to a studio monitor. Ear to finger feedback has a far more significant effect on "tone" than anything farther down the chain.

Motown went straight from 3 to 8. Rhythm and solo horn went mono to one track, lead vocal and instruments went to the other two, the whole instrumental went to one track on the second machine carrying the lead track over. Backgrounds were recorded last to fill in the energy holes. A similar approach was used for 8-track. Maybe 5 generations of 3 and three generations of 8.

We invented punching down and comping vocals at Motown using a three track. I'd never done it any other way until I moved to California in 1972.

We literally didn't know anything about recording at Motown but solving whatever problems came up while we were in our early 20s put us way ahead of the major labels. I didn't even realize it until after I'd moved to San Francisco.

I don't know about compression, but +4 on an API 550 at 100, 5k and 10k into tape always sounded like +2 into digital.

Prior to 1964 one feeding a Fairchild 660 was used for vocals. After 1964 the mikepres were removed and it was used to mix the guitar directs. After 1968 it wasn't used much.

The main thing about 635as and RE-15s is that they never get dropped on their nose.
