dan yes the Lynx N looks so awesome to me right now. U can custom pick your I/O & preamps, each pair is shielded w/ own converter chips per stereo pair of ch. The Lynx monitor app looks pretty bad but easy to figure out like UAD console. Just don’t know how Lynx N performs in regard to HDX style tracking & HW inserts. drbill do you still have the HD I/O & HDX plug? A few years ago if I remember you were getting new HD IO interfaces & HDX cards for 30-50% less than retail. Was thinking about going to a 8x8 w HDX but it’s still 7000 at Sweetwater. They will have stock til 2030 at that price.

Yes, Avid support says it supports the TB2>Ethernet adaptor, as a matter of fact you need both the USB-C>TB2 and TB2>ethernet adaptors to make it work with TB3. Ain't gonna work with my 2014 MBP regardless, have to wait out the new MBP/M1 processor/Big Sur compatibility to consider it. Ha ha, or just roll the dice that it will work with my 6 year old MBP... Came in today. Plugged it into the Apple TB2>ethernet adapter, enabled AVB in AMS and it showed up as both a system i/o, as well as a 'reserved for PT' i/o. Playing back a video, the system audio defaulted to the monitor and HP1 outs. Launched PT 2020.12 and the Carbon i/o was all mapped and available, success. So far I've just been testing some DSP configurations including playing guitar through Brainworx bx_rockrack... pretty cool. The DIs are very nice with 5 impedence settings and the HP amps can get uncomforatably loud while staying clean. Looking forward to getting it hooked up in the studio tomorrow. Only tried it with Gig Performer 3 so far to check it's native latency, 2.8ms round trip at a 128 buffer. Interestingly, both the 'reserved for PT' i/o and system i/o were available simultaneously, so I could play a soft synth in GP3 while monitoring a drum track from PT on the same Carbon outputs. Congrats 🎊 I am happy for you 👏 The Carbon looks great. How is the sound quality? What interface did the Carbon replace? Please post comparison between Carbon & previous interface & the preamps quality. I don’t like the SF Apollo preamps. I know they’re designed to be clean & plugins provide “ character “ but they are stale & lifeless to me compared to my standalone HW pres. The Avid Omni preamps were useable / better imo than SF Apollo. I want the PT Carbon in a 2 or 4 preamp version with a tad more I/o + 2 mon outs to avoid a separate monitor controller. That’s why the Lynx N looks best for me cuz the I/ O & pres are configureable.

I'm looking at a Flea 47 and debating their capsule choice ( f7 or f47 ).
Don't know that I have this right but my impression has been a M7 type cap may have a little more bottom at 200hz and below with a smooth high end at 10khz and is more vintage sounding overall,....... while a K47 has a little bit more body in the mids, a little more presence in the 2-4 khz range, with maybe a little less high end at 10khz, and sounds overall a bit more modern.
Those of you who have used 47 type mic's, which capsule do you prefer and why between a M7 or K47 style cap (or in my case a f7/f47cap) ?
Thanks, Mike
I already have a Flea 47 with Thiersch M7 Pvc capsule , and beeznees K7 ( K47 model ) capsule, and your description of the M7 vs K47 type is very accurate. M7 can get a little bit boomy in the low mids and has more highs (resulting in a kind of U curve) compared to the K47 that has less lows , richer mids overall and more presence in the upper mids as you said. After testing both capsules alot , i think K47 is more versatile , and i prefer it for my voice (for pop music) , and i think M7 sounds greater in female voices I bet your Flea 47 sounds amazing with the Thiersch Blue Line PVC M7 capsule. My experience w/ the Blue line capsule is great. My blue line capsule is in a custom FET transformer coupled output mic that sounds larger than life thru my RTZ Audio 9762 Dual. Mic even sounds good going in an Apollo interface pre.

Ok that’s some good feedback thanks guys! I’m going to head over to YouTube & do some research on some of these plugins.
Is there any Acoustica Audio makes that’s better than / equivalent too UAD 1176 mk2 or other mk2 UAD plugs?

Hearing phasing at the end around the 3:00 min mark in the Dropbox video. Is the UA guy using PT Ultimate ( HD ) or vanilla? I am using the upgraded console & just realized maybe this is why my HW inserts are off b/c I always used the original UAD console in PT mode even tho I know my new UAD console is PT mode as well. Just left a comment about this in the UA heritage thread as well sorry for the off topic just trying to get the most out of my UAD setup! Thanks

I was researching PT Carbon, HD IO w HDX ( can’t believe it is $7000, still ) Lynx N, & UAD last night. If PT carbon had a 2 or 4 mic pre interface like Lynx or UAD I would go with that. I don’t need 8. Lynx pricing is very fair and actually cheaper than the original Aurora units.
Want to expand my recording & mixing capabilities to where I don’t have to worry about anything lol ( latency, HW inserts etc ) & it seems a PT/ Avid interface is my only solution which is scary.
What could make a UAD Apollo print HW inserts in time sample accurate for 3+ years then all of a sudden a clients session doesn’t & ever since it’s not sample accurate.
My PT pref do not let my I/O be over written. Always work at 48 kHz. Could opening a 44.1 session affect this permanently?

I read on another audio forum about the music studio & tattoo parlor. Maybe I was confused since I don’t know the area.
As far as rumors, i stated what I read to see if others had insight, not that I believed it verbatim.
Also I was confused why an NSA sector focused on GA would be based in Nashville.

Stumbled across this YouTube channel. They have tear downs & walk thru’s of some of our faves. Buddy explains that most of the THD in 1176 comes from the transistors not the transformers. Learned most compressors convert AC voltage into DC for the compressor side chain. He also makes color modules & other gear. YT Channel is: DIY Recording Equipment youtube.com/user/PetersonGoodwynVideos: -> LA4 -> AMS Neve 33609 -> “ marinair “ original vs new remakes discussed. -> API vintage Pre vs API new Pre -> 1176 Pt 1 Tear down -> 1176 PT 2 distortion, color, circuit -> What makes a Neve pre ? Many more vids on there as well! Hope y’all enjoy

Was AKM the mfr of the A to D chips used in all Apollos? Do all mk2 & X Apollos use the ESS Sabre DAC? Re: Apollo AKM vs new chip Apollo I can see see a 100 page GS thread w/ lots of moderation! Hoping this will turn out to be a positive for UAD & us Apollo users.

Heard there was a music studio or two + a famous tattoo parlor that got demolished on this street. Is this true? Does anyone know the studio owners? I’m not too familiar w/ Nashville but I do know they call the music areas “ Studio Row & Music Row “ . Was this area affected at all by this bombing? I am a very positive person 95% of the time but this has me wondering what’s next Def hoping there isnt any further aftermath.

I just saw some things that said a major part of what happens at that ATT center had to do with NSA Surveillance. Yes and this NSA sector focuses on the state of GA. Also the building previously belonged to Cerebrus Capital who owns Dominion voting systems who currently the CEO wants to sue Trump.

I’m surprised UAD didnt stockpile a very key part of their interfaces. Still confused on the $400 price increase. Instead UAD could: 1.) drop plugin prices. 2.) Port/ Go native. 3.) Charge for Luna. ( $99 my rec ) 4.) Offer a subscription model. 5.) Offer Apollo purchasers a $600 add on for a 1 year sub to the whole UAD catalog. 6.) UAD3 hybrid engine 7.) Bundle satellite w/ Apollo Many times I’ve had a $50 ( rarely $100 ) voucher but the UAD bundle i want is still $249// $299 / $199 after it. The UAD sales model makes most UAD plugin customers wait for the summer & holiday sales or get a custom bundle when purchasing. I don’t see a newbie or new pro audio customer spending $1400+ For a 2 in 4 out twin quad + more $ for the plugins. 4.) Subscription Model Non starter.... I said offer not force What doesn’t work for you may work for others. Slate sub has done really well. I am not a fan of subscriptions but I’m also not a fan the current price increase so was offering ideas.

And back to the topic, sorry guys I would really be interested to hear the WA67 against other mics in its price range like the miktek c7e, the United Fet47, the AA 67. Zen Pro is putting Neumann K67/870 capsules in these Warm 67 so it must be a good foundation to put such an expensive capsule in it. Maybe they upgrade some components idk but to me it still speaks to the quality of the mic.

Old session had a lead vocal tracked w/ AR51 into Aurora GTQ2 into Aurora GTC2 doing max -5db GR into Avid Omni & later a Black Lion 192. Vocal treatment: 1.) FF Pro Q2 notching & filters. 2.) FF ProMB > smooth the vocal envelope. 3.) UAD Pultec for color & gain. 4.) L1 knocking off loudest peaks a cpl dB. 5.) R comp w 10ms attack for clarity, texture & balance. 6.) 2 parallel sends for UAD 2a & 76a. 7.) ProQ2 after the parallel comps. 8.) Sends off each parallel comp to harmonics to add to the vox. 9.) blend w the lead. 10.) Blend parallels w Lead. 11.) Add 4 more sends for Verbs & Delays. 12.) Little volume auto for taste & excitement. Great vocal sound but way too much work/ stress. I expect to do all that w/ a $100 blue spark thru an Mbox mini preamp. Not a $1000 -$2000 mic thru a $5,000 pre & comp. The miktek c7e ($899) or Thiersch Blue line M7 FET mic I customized requires way less for a finished vocal. Esp an 87 it’s just filters & parallel comp & boom:) The C7e was better than the AR51 thru the same chain. The AR51 made the Miktek CV4 ( $1699 now, even less used ) sound like a vintage 251 & the CV4 can get real exciting around 9-12 kHz lol. Miktek C7e also has a voltage switch to change the capsule from +44 for a vintage or +60V for modern. I would take the 2 United fet47 $799 & or 1 United Fet47 & 1 C7e $899 all day over one AR51. Those two mics would cover so many vocals & workhorse duties. Throw them thru a Weight tank wt72 pre or Locomotive 286a, or similar V72/76 tube pre to enhance the sound even further. I honestly don't think that's too crazy of a signal path. That kind of stuff is pretty standard for most modern, dense arrangements. Doesn't necessarily mean the mic sucks — if the end result was awesome, the mic did its job. That said, I agree about the UT FET47. I'd take one over an AR51. I had the United mic for a few weeks and it was really impressive. Only returned it because it didn't offer anything I wasn't already getting with my M149. But man, for $800, it's one hell of a mic. I really prefer to keep the vocal as natural as possible after it’s recorded. If the vocal has something I don’t like I try adjust the mic position first & adjust performance distance from the capsule. I don’t want to have to notch out 10 things & come up with polishing methods when a better mic can be provide better capture.

Gotta think about reflections in the room though as well. Food for thought. Yeah for sure, that can happen w/ any monitor screen esp if not in an ideal spot. For 2 way forward firing monitors I see no issue w/ curved or non curved. Esp as it’s behind your 2 way monitors in an equilateral mix triangle there shouldn’t be any issue w comb filtering or early reflections. If you have a 3 way monitors like me w side firing woofers there isn’t much you can do. Was thinking I could wrap the curve around the back of the monitors if I got a big enough one. Either way my subs are firing into the screen b/c low freqs are omnipresent like ripples in a lake with a rock. Thanks

Nice chain! Have heard a lot about Burl conversion and how the AD shapes the sound. Never heard a burl converter before. And yeah it’s funny how you said you had to do a lot of eq carving w/ the mic. That is one of things aside from the mic sounding like two diff versions w/ the capsule changes. Since you bought your used for a fair price that may affect your opinion. Also you may have the original version w/ center terminated type capsule vs the edge terminated that replaced it. Imo the $2000 can be spent better elsewhere. Ofc this my experience & ymmv Man, I truly appreciate your insight! I am coming to the recording space from the other side of the control room, so most of what I'm doing is just ears and stuff. I have to do a lot of dessing, eq-ing, etc. to get it in the pocket for sure. I'm not arguing that it's a great mic, I'm just saying it's worked for us. I got into the B2 after just not feeling what the Apollo BF was doing. It's taken me a good 7-8 years to assemble the Burl I have today, but it is unmatched on the music we do, rock/electronic stuff. My setup is hybrid, but the Burl is wonderful. Congrats on the Burl gear!!! That is top of the line big boy pro audio. I’m sure that took a lot of hard work & saving to get! I can only imagine the sound quality difference between a dedicated converter like Burl & all in one interface. I am very intrigued in a new monitor DA! Old session had a lead vocal tracked w/ AR51 into Aurora GTQ2 into Aurora GTC2 doing max -5db GR into Avid Omni & later a Black Lion 192. Vocal treatment: 1.) FF Pro Q2 notching & filters. 2.) More current to drive higher impedance loads. Less resistance/ impedance less current to drive the load. A speakers impedance changes as soon as it moves. I assume headphones are the same since they are amplified transducers but not 100% sure.
Monkey was referring to ohms law -> voltage = current x resistance
I used this for car audio amps before using an Oscope E = √(PR) Voltage equals the square root of Power x Resistance Ex 1 : E {voltage} = sq root of ( 3000 W x 1 ohm ) = sq root ( 3000 ) = 54.77 V AC. So 54.77 V Ac = the square root of 3000 W x 1 ohm
Ex 3: E { voltage }= sq root of ( 500 W x 8 ohms ) = sq rt of 4000 = 63.25 V
In this ex it takes 54.77 V for this amp to produce 3000 Watts @ 1 ohm impedance & 63.25 V to produce 500 Watts @ 8ohms impedance.

Rack unit or 500 for the 1290 pre ? Went to the website ( I shouldn’t have smh ) & couldn’t decide on getting a 1176 A or the dual LA3A & missed out on both.. My attack time wasn’t fast enough for the release. My smarter self says to pick one & save until I figure out my HW inserts issues. Then I started looking at the buss comp. Most ppl say this smokes the Stam mk1. I can make this work cuz I print mixes & masters .. dammit, sold out lol I noticed there was a $100 sale on the units I’m interested in. How long is the sale offered? Would love to save a few bucks if possible! Thx Hey Chase! ;-) Mwhahaha, you made the RIGHT move - great analogy, too!! V1290 will be offered in 500-Series format first - if there's enough demand, we'll perhaps offer it in a 1RU dual channel format 😎🤘 The sale will be valid for the foreseeable future...! EASY PEASY! My personal recommendation - snag a BUSS COMP first and after that, an OPTO COMP (depending upon what you already own in analog hardware of course!). We build in small batches and we list each new small batch twice a week, EVERY week up on our website! Same days, same time EVERY week: Wednesday at 8PM EST and Saturday at 8PM EST Like clockwork! So keep your eyes peeled tomorrow at 8PM EST SHARP, hahaha ;-) Thank you for checking us out and we hope to see you join the AS FAM very soon!! <3 Ok will do! Yeah I missed out on Saturday cuz I couldn’t make up my mind lol. Website is a really nice layout as well. Thanks for the thorough answer

I don’t think UA is targeting guys like us, existing customer base who’s already purchased a fair number of plugins. I mean, think about it. If there is a possible looming Apollo shortage, and you need to increase your revenue to make up for it, then sell those limited number of Apollo’s to fresh meat, people that are just getting into the UAD ecosystem and are willing to continue spending money on plugins throughout the year. Yeah this business model does not take into account loyal UAD Apollo users who want to upgrade SF to X or mk2 to X & has all UAD plugins we NEED & then some. $400 more. No added updates, upgrades, or features. They already embellish the I/O amounts. Seems they are adding $400 to the price of already built Apollo’s. Not up charging b/c the chips & other parts cost went up by X $ amount to build new Apollos. So if your purchase a Twin X w/ a X16 I guess that’s $800 extra 😳 Are they going to give you 20 plugins you already have? Based on Phantom’s list I wouldn’t spend $400 for those. I mean $600 is a lot of $$$ according to the USA govt.

Well, just like a U47. Chris I can make a U47 or U87 work on whoever but not a AR51. More often than not the 47 or 87 pairs well with most voice. Ntm the added experience/ feeling of singing into a real 47 & how that affects the talent. I remember the first time I heard myself via a real long body u47. A U67 was already mic’d up in the large A live room & u87i in the booth. I didn’t like the 67 sound coming back thru my headphones. Could have been the cue mix or maybe I wasn’t used to hearing my voice like that. They put up the 47 & man oh man I was blown away. 47 into ( forget the preamp ) into the SSL E/ G console Into PTHD. The mix was ran to tape & the tape returns paralleled into the console & PTHD for print & monitoring. It’s been a long time but I think that’s the signal flow. This was b4 I was hands on with engineering wanting to learn every aspect & application. This was at Tree Sound Studios A room.
