Just wondering if it’s bad enough that I don’t want to deal with it.

Here's what you'll have to deal with . . . You could buy one or more, and then buy replacement KK84 capsule(s) and have them replaced. Probably costly.

Just wondering if it’s bad enough that I don’t want to deal with it. Why the 85 John? Is there one available, or do you think it might be good for close mic-ing those guitars? If the latter, consider the 83. I've found you can get right up on the guitar, and really dial things in with that capsule/combo.

That actually seems pretty steep

And aren’t the new capsules like $400?

4dB per octave is pretty gentle. That would take care of proximity effect a lot.

It’s gentle but it starts so frickin high that it just feels steep. The thing is if you put it real close thinking you will use the proximity effect to counter the roll off you notice this dip around. 200. The thing was designed for speech an installed sound where they would be mounted on goosenecks and the mics would be just left open. The low end cut kept feedback down and noise from page turns and thumps. Everybody I know who ever bought one ended up with an 84 capsule so I wouldn’t pay more than $500 thinking of it as just the electronics.

Yeah, if you want to reduce proximity, I second the "better off going for an 83" thang. Not that I have ever tried an 83 or 85 mind...
