Is anyone using an external bypass switch other than the one on outboard gear? My compressor has no bypass switch and I'm wondering if there is a gadget that could precede a piece of gear with a switch to bypass it?

I don't know of one but that doesn't mean there's not one out there. Are you trying to just do in/out comparison quickly to hear what you're doing? If you're doing this as a plugin in the DAW, I'd think that'd be the easiest way to do it unless you have more stuff going on in the analog domain.
Modifying a case for an actual true bypass switch is not difficult, maybe $5 in parts, but would require some soldering, wiring, and maybe physically drilling a hole to mount a switch.
If you wanted an outboard bypasser, that would be pretty easy too...four jacks per channel (IN, send, receive, OUT) and a single DPDT switch. Maybe $15 total, including a small project box.

Serpent Audio makes the Send N Blend. Not as cheap as the DIY switch but you do gain parallel compression.

Thanks for the advise. The outboard bypasser idea sounds tempting but I don't have any electronic skills, but it being such an inexpensive project could be an excuse to try it for fun.

Simplest most versatile and long term best solution? Patchbay!

Simplest most versatile and long term best solution? Patchbay! Doesn't really let you do an A/B quickly. Well not as quick as a bypass switch!

Have you considered using patch bays / patchfield?

I know a lot of places that and mults pretty much dedicated for A/Bing so you could do it fast. In fact you could easily set it up so the normalling was the switch so you could do it as fas as switch. Some of the most rewarding, easiest, and cost saving DIY projects are wiring a bay or 2 for functions like this, mults, polarity reverse, pads, iso transformers ect.

That's a great idea to have a patchbay dedicated to those things, I never thought of that.
