I've had a real one. Hard to sell, takes up a lot of room, heavy to move, people who can play it well are far and few between. Quite happy with my pal bringing over his Nord or Vox Continental and Korg Leslie simulator. The only thing I miss is a really well overdriven 122 and separately micing the horns and rotor, but you can get there by splitting the signal with a HPF and routing one to a separate track. I do not miss hauling that thing when we moved spaces, even with organ dollies.

I got one myself of the A100 variety, the “home” model with speakers. Of course the internal speakers are disabled and it’s hooked to a Leslie 147. Nothing compares to it.

Still the king, still irreplaceable. Some plug ins and simulators are a lot closer than they used to be. But for those with discerning taste, there is no substitute.

The Nord & VSTs are getting surprisingly good....especially when they’re in a mix....

Nothing like the real thing. Love mine and can’t imagine parting with it. It records with a depth and width that impacts the soundstage of a mix in a big way. The plugins and emulations sound pretty good but lack the depth, width, and mojo of the real thing. If the organ is a prominent part of the arrangement the real thing is untouchable. If it’s a less prominent part, my Nord or a plugin can do a pretty respectable job

That's is the thing. I don't run a business, so it doesn't matter to me, but no one has ever said "man I like that song, but what's with the organ?" It just doesn't happen. On the other hand, I also had a Model D for a long time and while it was a BEAST, nothing since makes the chorus sound of the dual tone wheels in action.

How are you guys recording your Nords? My wife has one, and I’ve been experimenting recordingnit through a fender twin and a Marshall plexi. To me, it Sounds way more real that way (as compared to DI), but imho it still pales in comparison to the real thing. I’m mostly using Rhodes/Wurlitzer sounds. Anything special you guys do to get a more authentic sound?

Still seems like the player matters the most. Had a B3 guy over a while back and he made B5 sound freaking amazing.

no one has ever said "man I like that song, but what's with the organ?" It just doesn't happen. I get the opposite quite often "man, I like that song, but what's with the organ? It's incredible!!!"

Anything special you guys do to get a more authentic sound? For electro-mechanical pianos, recording a Nord Electro into a Twin Reverb (Silverface, though I have now converted it to Blackface) beat a real Rhodes (DI'd) so many times it wasn't funny. Same player. The Rhodes was tracked at another studio and we ended up redoing all the tracks. However, I now own a beautifully restored and upgraded Wurlitzer 200, and I swear nothing can touch it. It's instant "I Never Loved A Man". I'm recording it into a REDDI and to a DAV preamp for some extra gain. It's just heavenly.

Anything special you guys do to get a more authentic sound? I split Rhodes/Wurly sounds between direct and a 50's Gibson BR6, a little more round note then a Twin at a lot less volume. I'd agree a well maintained tube Wurly is much better, I compared the Nord Rhodes sound to my Stage 88 and that was another 500lbs I was happy to get rid of.

I have no doubt you do. Given your name, if it's an Allmans reference, that is one sound I can never get in the studio, real or not real. The way Gregg distorts the lows on those 122's in some Filmore passages still makes me swoon. And there is something about a set up with a Hammond PR-40 and a 122/147 that really rocks the jazz sound, but you need a guy who knows how to work the percussion right.

I've got leslies - a killer old 122 and a 120 for guitars....but I agree, there's no substitute for the real deal. I've had a hammond before, and got rid of it due to maintenance issues, I've got my eye on a cut down, road modded A100 right now with another 122. Sigh....heavy and takes a lot of room that I don't really have, but I'm an inch from pulling the trigger..... As a player, I have to agree with drsax - there's nothing like the real thing. I've been chasing "that sound" since I was 15 and heard Santana and the Allman Bros. for the first time.

Had a guy bring in a real Leslie with the drawbar Nord one time. Great combo! My pop has a C3 in his living room, but he mostly plays his Kurzweil for everything now. (This makes me sound like a kid, I’m over 40).

Had a guy bring in a real Leslie with the drawbar Nord one time.. I've got a Voce V3 that has the Leslie multipin connector out for the 122, and it sounds great - BUT - it lacks a little something, and it won't drive the leslie hard enough... So close....but so far.......

Played my wife a recording of a real one vs the best imitation I could get out her Nord -> fender twin, and ever since she’s been demanding that I buy a 200a.

I had an M3 many years ago. Still have the 147 that went with it, which needs some restoration. I have a dual-manual Korg BX3 which is quite respectable. Once I restore the 147, I will connect the BX3 to it with an old school CBS interface pedal. I can't wait to hear it that way.

The name is our band's name, and we all love the Allmans, but our music goes in a different direction. Our keyboardist is more of a Roy Bittan type piano player, but the Hammond still rocks. I've gotten pretty good at recording it. Placing it in a room via a well chosen reverb makes a big difference, by the way!

Shhh... Please don't tell my drumming/bass play'n/regular Geetar Friends.
But the B3, and the Slide & Steel Pedal Guitar, are my favorite instruments! (to listen to)
As you can guess, I too love the Classic ABBB music! Chris
