I’m looking to add a couple more 1176’s to my rack. What do you think of the hairball kits? I know the splice is nice. Any others that should get the honorable mention? Are the 500 series as good as the rack equivalents?

I’d recommend the Audioscape units. I had two Hairballs and sold them for Audioscape units. Unless you enjoy DIY the Audioscape is only $100 more built with a warranty, and has some nice upgrades.

If you're into building kits, hairball is great. They've been around since the dawn of diy 1176's which gave birth to all the guys building the kits and selling them as their own brands before finally doing their own units.

What do you like/prefer about the F. vs a,d,g ?

A - best suited to vocals, and the best friend a vocal ever had. in tandem with a good opto D - bass guitar's dirty sexy lover. Honestly, just loves bass. Also great on certain drums and voices. F - best in class for toms and snare, even kick G - very little difference to the F, but sometimes a little more headroom making it better for the snap of a kick drum
That's my position THIS week. It'll probably change.
EDIT : But if I had to pick just one, it would have to be the F

Sweet! I love 1176 talk! Lol! Pumping action! My Audioscape Rev A sounds great, and I really like the Purple Audio 1176 too. I found a sweet deal on a custom Hairball rev D close by, guy says it destroys the UA reissues and sounds like a good vintage Bill Putnam unit. Going to listen to it in the next couple days. He claims to have built several 1176 versions, so he is adept on the sounds. Definitely snagging it, if I like the way it sounds. I have a difficult time buying blind. Hairball has that orange capacitor mod, Has anyone built or heard one of those on a Rev D? I guess I could build a Hairball Kit and experiment with different parts to see where I can take it. Curious on the Rev F version and how that compares? Some people claim to like this version the best for drums. Not really wanting to go down that DIY rabbit hole just yet. But knowing me, I will at some point. I had to cancel my ADG Stam order, just couldn’t wait any longer. So, the hairballls are the bomb? Haven’t heard one yet. Doing so soon.

The audioscape says sold out for those models, are they in stock often? I'm also in a rev a search. For the price point, I'm looking at the cla rev a from bla... I rhymed on purpose. It's priced well!

It's priced well! I’ve been frequenting Audioscape’s site. Just email Chris, he can give you some info on his timelines and stock.

So the pcb full kit landed in states is around $750 for 2 76, ms and hpf,
You just have to build them.
So, roughly half price vs warm, audioscape, bla for very good quality diy.

Oh ya: thx and the build price is ? On the site! And it says €1450 ex VAT. Edit:FYI, the MS76 will be gone from the GOLY line pretty soon. Im trying to steer that into fresher waters, and I have a few things coming that will bump it out. Gustav

Hey Gustav, transformer input and out or transformless? THAT circuit in and out. Theres a footprint for the LL5402 on the PCB, but I wouldnt spring for it, unless you need galvanic separation. This guy made a clip of it on youtube - IC version/his own design. Gustav

Mvh Håkan Yes, I am in Denmark. When I design the units, I send them out to real engineers, take them back, send them out again, go and listen for myself as well in their professional rooms. In my own work space, I have measuring equipment, and only an old, busted, active KRK speaker to get some signal up when needed. Listening party in my space would be very disappointing, I am sure (You may be able to book some time with Emil in Aarhus -http://etmastering.dk He was my main ears on the PG and is working with the prototype) Gustav
