Nice interview and insight into the song with Warren and Shelly Yakus.
And a shoutout to our very own Don! Enjoy!

Got to hang out a bit with Warren and Jack Douglas, at the last NAMM. Super nice (or should I say "Mar-ve-lous") guys. Along with songs like "Year Of The Cat", among my favorite purr-fect records, of all time! Very subjective-of course-but 70's records like this epitomize the "sonic apex" of Popular Music recording. Levon, thanks for the link. A long video for the youtube attention span, but really informative. It was great to see Shelly Yakus again. I haven't seen him in decades, although I spoke to him when he did a surround SACD mix of 'Reaper' for SONY in the mid 2000's.
Shelly is a huge talent, a pioneer and IMO underappreciated for his expertise and his ears and his style of record making. We did two studio LP’s (as well as the platinum “Some Enchanted Evening” live record) with Shelly at Record Plant, “Agents” and “Spectres” and they stand alone sonically and stylistically from the rest in the spread of our catalog.
Nice to get props from Warren Huart. For me, and the band, and that he obviously appreciated Shelly Yakus’ contribution to “Reaper.”
I invite all here to watch this video at your leisure, if only to know me and BOC’s music a little better, and I’m making some notes and will post again about my recollections recording this song and commenting on the video. Of particular interest is the revelation to me that Shelly's multiple guitar amp mic blending included limiting of some of the mics. I did not know that! But he had a great ear for blending the mics always, and it went to tape that way.
And I still can't get my home recordings to sound as good as Shelly's. But I still want to.

Watch the video it was a fantastic insight. Made me think of how lucky we are to have Don as part of this board, and how lucky I was to get to meet him in person and have a chat about music and watch him play.
Cheers

Great tribute, Shelly Yakus is so humble it's inspiring.
I was there in Nashville when Wiz was, Don is a mind blowing guitar player, you don't get to stand next to someone like that every day.
They said guitar gear was a Gibson ES-175 into a Music Man combo... any clues on what guitar pedals were used?
Of course it's all about the epic performance, but I'm in guitar-nerd mode right now. I've got a new fuzz pedal coming tomorrow.

Lately Reaper has been following me around everywhere, hop in a Land Rover at the car show and Reaper is playing on the Radio ( don’t think anybody understood why I found this ironic because Last year BOC did a Gig at the show for the dealers Association Charity), walking through the Power and Light District Sunday night to try Guy Fieri’s new place Reapers blasting out of the KC live area ( food was OK at best). The thing is I started to see how great of a song and production it is when I here it as background music, it just stands out in this situation. You see a generation who really doesn’t know it humming or singing along, heads bopping involuntarily, it’s infectious. Shelly’s magic holds up through Bose or the cheapest 70volt 8 inch a contractor can find and that’s saying something. Forget the fact that our friend Don and the band are some of the nicest guys out there, these guys can play, solid night after night no matter the crowd. It’s good to see Shelly, we met once years ago at one of those industry dog and pony shows. He probably wouldn’t remember me nor recognize me ( ok most wouldn’t from over 20 years ago) but he was one of the least “industry “ guys ever, it was like hanging with Jerome or JK. He had no problem with sharing stories. We are lucky to have all the talent and knowledge that’s shared and this site and this video is a great reminder that one of our friends has given us some really great music.

So, what were the pedals used ? An overdrive or distortion? There were overtones in the sound that 16 year old Ward could only get with a Vestax Distortion pedal.

That was good stuff. I’ve pretty much been a one mic on guitar cab kinda a guy but the limiter trick to bring up the sustain and body while the other mic gets the attack and note definition sounds like a fun experiment. donr does the guitar and amp combo sound right to you? I thought I had read somewhere that it was a Twin, but that could very well just be a faulty memory on my part. Wouldn’t be the first time. was fun hearing the stems. I think my high school band got pretty close. I think we may have even had a cowbell. Guiro? Not so much. Cheers, Geoff

I used the MusicMan 410 combo for most of "Agents Of Fortune." One exception was a 2x12 Risson combo which is the chugging rhythm sound and dark chords on "This Ain't The Summer Of Love." I played both parts on the record. No other amp sounds like it.
The main guitar part on DFTR, that opens the song, is Murray Krugman's Gibson ES-175, both pickups, the bridge full up and the neck blended in a bit.
The lead guitar was my Gibson SG, still relatively stock at that point, as far as I remember, excepting I took off the trem and put a stop tailpiece on it.
Both recorded through the MusicMan, although the amp was cranked for the lead. No pedals. I never used pedals except echo machines, until later. I was in the room next to the amp, and got some singing feedback when I wanted it.
I didn't realize that Shelly Yakus' multi-mic and limiting technique so enhanced the way that was recorded. All I knew at the time is it sounded freakin' great.
I'd also forgotten that the studio had a carpet. It was a typical '70's dead room. I think all the ambience on "Agents" is plate echo and tape slap. I think that's all we had.

I think that must be Warren's studio, or maybe Shelly's, but Shelly's body language is telling me he's not in his own place. Whereas Warren seems to know his way around the room. I've tried calling Shelly, haven't gotten him yet.
