I have a request from a person who needs to transfer 90's video tapes to digital. I think they assume they are audio tapes, which is why they are talking to me...
KCA 30 DA8 mp30 DAT r16 Betacam sp
anyone on here do this kind of thing? I guess I could buy some machines off ebay and try to do it myself.

Its been a thing I've learned bits and pieces here and there, but would rather somebody else take this project. Then again, I see how cheap the studio editors have become, ... $50,000 editors for less than $100? This project could fund a whole buildout if they are want to pay for it I guess.

George Blood (https://www.georgeblood.com) can transfer pretty much any format out there. (I've restored a wire recorder and a Dictaphone for him!)

Pretty much any post facility should be able to do those transfers.

Yeah, I don’t think you’re going to make a ton of money from transferring video. I think it’s pretty cheap nowadays. Also, if you aren’t familiar enough with video, it could end up being a real time sink for you.

Yup, that's why i suggested George Blood - good to have somebody who's got all the options to hand. Keep in mind the original client thinks all of these are audio and that could be right: the UMatic could be PCM16x0, the DA8 could be DTRS, we know the DAT is audio, and the Beta tape could be PCM-F1. If you pop one of these in a video deck and see dancing bits, you're going to do some scrambling to find playback machines.

Remember back when there was a break in human consciousness, and common sense went out the window, and they tried recording music on their VCRs? And they actually thought it sounded better than reel to reel tape? Good times.

thanks for the tip! Yeah this is a weird one, a huge lot. I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s editing room tapes for a film and score. I think they just want to know what’s on the tapes, if they are worth holding onto, or tossing. Bay Area would probably be best, (but don’t want some kid at Costco tossing this stuff online)
