I’ll admit I haven’t listened to everything. Cuz sanity.
But I did almost make it through the Cardi B thing and the producer bit. I have to admit I find her thing and the term music to be mutually exclusive. I honestly feel bad for the 115 million people who have looked at that on the YouTube and presumably liked it. There’s just nothing there I can hang my interest on. No melody. No lyrical hook of interest. Beats just boring and repetitive. The producer shed some light on what he was trying to achieve and it just didn’t have enough melody or rhythmic variation to hook me. But I’m in my mid 50s and a guitar player raised on Aerosmith and ZEP etc. So. Not exactly the target demographic. But I still felt sad that this is what’s popular.
I have become my parents.
Cheers, Geoff

Just to clarify that a bit further, it’s not that I just don’t like it. Which I obviously don’t. I clearly don’t understand its appeal. At all. Meanwhile going through a Bevis Frond thing - kinda psychedelic tinged classic rock and just bought Lee Fields, think old Sokol soul, tix. Whatever modern hip hop is, or even r’n’b is probably isn’t for me. Still like my D’Angelo discs though.
Cheers, Geoff

We have a huge number of small town and large city ghettos today in America who understand/speak the language and sentiment of the song and 13 year old's, both ghetto and suburban, have always liked audacious egotism. That's who it appeals to imo.

The worst song ever are all the songs that I had to listen to on the car radio while driving my daughter to ice skating training this afternoon...the exception being Billie Eilish who actually is a wonderfully fantastic young artist. I saw her perform live on the Swiss Music Awards this year and was fairly blown away by her performance.

But after learning its meaning (thank you!), I can see how in trying to offer Geoff help understanding Kardi B's appeal, I may have just added to his distress. Sorry Geoff!

Billie Eilish is amazing, bought her mini album on vinyl just yesterday after my daughter has been haranguing me for weeks to get it. It's a great press too. Watched some interviews with her, seems pretty grounded. Her brother does a lot of the production work apparently. http://instagram.com/p/BuWFoSKnVp5

I am going to assume that her next album will also be special, unlike a few others that to me fairly bombed on their next attempt. Her depth in lyrics is impressive for someone so young.

Our 11 yo daughter has turned us on to loads of great music the last few years. As I said earlier in the thread, she also loves Sinatra, Beatles, Cocteau Twins, Incredible String Band, Stereolab etc. I think she's lucky to have been exposed to such an abundance of music her whole life, and now its finally paying off as she recommends new stuff to us. This is my fave Billie Eilish track:

I had to listen to some Aretha/Dusty/Gladys/Denise "Niecy"/Lady Day... Just to wash this thread off! (but I like the Billie Ellish song and David Essex's song is great) Chris

When we were young we might have been somewhat self-destructive but we didn't idolize stupid.

Often I find myself baffled by my own taste.
My mornings used to consist of news. I found I went from zero to annoyed so quickly I decided I would have MTV on while doing morning stuff. Then, well, Cardi B.
I told my wife it was like her music was engineered in a lab with the specific intent to piss me off.
I now sit in silence.
Baffilingly, I really like Post Malone. I don’t understand why.
I start to dissect issues of commonality and/or cultural appropriation and whether it is wrong for a fifty year old Anglo. Then I realize I don’t give a shit and should be writing anyway.

I love "Bafflingly," as a sentence starter. Nice post, had me laughing.

Submitted for your pleasure Is it just me being crazy but I got this song in my head and re-listened.
I think I like it in a weird kind of 60's throw back way.
The recording is rubbish and raw but the dude can sing.
I think I need counseling.
The Video and power stance however LOL. 2 million views and counting.

I think we have a new winner. Imagine being the engineer the hardest thing would getting your name spelt wrong on the credits.
On the plus side this is the only song I can dance in time to.
But wasn't this at least a little bit on purpose? The same as is intended from a general punk perspective? It's a distinction. I am not sure it was there other stuff is not much better. Unless their whole identity was this awful guitar center on Saturday morning sound they where going for.

Unless their whole identity was this awful guitar center on Saturday morning sound they where going for. This was just their dad forcing them to play music. I don't think they had any training or anything. Totally weird story.
