You might hear the FET/Opto combo more just because 1176 and LA-2A have been the most popular compressors in studios for years and in practice.
Vari-Mu compression (from what I know) has been relatively less common and fewer options out there, until more recently. I know that is opposite of when they were actually developed...but thinking availability might be a factor. Not every studio had Fairchilds, and Altec/Manley VariMu might not have been first choice for vocals.
I have a Tubecore 500 and it is a great combo with my UA 1176! It can get pretty fast release times.

It can get pretty fast release times. Vari-mu is also considered one of (if not 'the') the earliest forms of audio compressions also. The other types, FET VCA Opto, could be considered improvements.
