Anyone have any experience with their stuff? I have one of the SFP30 single channel pres coming today! The YouTube demos they put up are a little weird, but that color control does something really cool. Just don’t hear people talking about their stuff at all.

No one? lol...It's really cool. Very wide an hi-fi sounding. Turning up the color dials in some of that natural tube compression that most people associate with tube gear. I dig it. Sounds really killer with my vintage 87. Perfect for vocals. Don't sleep on these if you're looking for a nice tube pre.

Didn't know Ben Stiller is one of the guys behind Useful Arts Audio:

I don't think Ben is involved in the UseFul Arts Company, but he plays drums in a band along with Peter.
That said, I hosted a day here with Pete last year, going thru all his gear, and I must say, his stuff is top notch, sounds wonderful, and a very good deal $$$.
He, (Peter) is also a GREAT guy. Loads of laughs.

Hummmmm?
Could be, Peter never said anything about that. I thought Ben was only involved in the new release, but ya never know?

I’ll chime back in and say I’m really loving this pre. So far I’ve recorded vocals and acoustics. It can sound really natural and hi-fi or add that touch of a “floaty fluffy” thing that some natural tube compression and harmonics add to a signal when you turn up the color knob. It looks super cool too with the blue backlight on the VU meter.

Still using mine on the regular. It’s my go to for 90% of the stuff I record. I have some BAE 312’s that offer a nice contrast and an electric and co modified ampex for a more vintage tube vibe. Kinda miss having a 73 around, but I can always grab a golden age or something to finish up the collection.

I agree it really does nice things for a vintage U87. That's part of why I was looking for a good tube pre. My 87 always sounded best with the Manley Vox Box I used to have. I reviewed it for Tape Op (after purchasing) and you can read it Here. I also reviewed their Bf-S DI read that Here

I am not sure if the 1073 sound is what I like, I may prefer tube preamp. I am currently trying to find the best one to go with my vintage u87also.

Yeah, with the 87 tubes somewhere tends to work well. The SFP is a really good match. Me too, I recent tried the heritage audio elite 73eq and it sound cold and clinical. Do you guys have any examples of the U87 with the Useful Arts pre you could share?

I notice that the u87 tends to be very midrangey, which leads me to believe the 1073 emphasis to the range too much. I am assuming a good tube mic preamp would smooth it out a bit.

I bought a 1950’s Rca germanium mic pre and 1940’s Gates tube pre from Doug a few month ago . My other pre’s pretty much setting idle since . Not getting rid of the others , but these are covering a lot of bases
