They've been teasing this computer for a long time. At one point the talk was late 2017/early 2018. I was thinking about holding out for it but in the fall of 2017 my 2007 cheesegrater was pissing me off too often and it became clear the new Mac Pro wouldn't be out as soon as hoped, so I bought a tricked out iMac instead. 18 months later I'm still happy with that choice.

It’s a rumor, and there have rumors about a new modular top end Mac since the trash can replaced the cheese grater, I’ll believe it when I see it. I just don’t see Tim Cook’s Apple giving us a modular machine, this seams more of an out growth of the internet’s collective dream machine.

Not only do you have to use Thunderbolt, you have to use a MAC OS. I just don't get it....

My 2012 cheesegrater works like a brand new machine. It runs super stable and is running all day most days. I just can’t see any need to upgrade it any time soon.

I just souped up my 2010 12 core Mac Pro with 32 gigs of RAM, two 1TB SSD internal drives, High Sierra and PT2018 Ultimate. It's smokin' fast and super stable now. Feels like a brand new computer! Why would I drop $4k on a new one?

Well, we don’t know what the new one will offer yet. Considering most feel the old rusty cheesgaters are still just fine, the 2 gen. newer version after they admitted the trashcan was an epic fail will probably (but who knows?) be smokin’.

Why would I drop $4k on a new one? Really been considering this since I have a 2010 5,1 Mac Pro and thinking about maxing it out instead of a new Mac. How many processors/cores do you have in your 2012? Do you use many software instruments or mainly dealing with audio?

Last year my 2009 4,1 8 core Mac Pro was really groaning. I did the firmware flash to 5,1 then upgraded the trays to maxed out 12 cores with 64gb of RAM. I'd already been running an SSD in a PCIe adapter for the boot drive and a SSD on the backplane for sessions as well as 48gb RAM so I thought I was doing ok and the upgrade would buy me a few years, or at least help me get through sessions. The jump was much bigger than I expected, runs huge sessions in Ableton (which we use for writing), in HDX it's a beast, haven't even come close to maxing out. Not the cheapest upgrade but well under $1k and I have a computer that feels new, not 10 years old.

The best thing about the trashcan is it's really quiet.

One can hope...
(From Mac Rumours again, a little update..)
“Apple is said to be considering previewing the new Mac Pro at the Worldwide Developers Conference, set to take place from June 3 to June 7.”

MacRumors is also teasing an updated iPod Touch. I keep one of the old ipod classics hooked up to my car but that ipod is starting to become unreliable. It locks up on me and the only way to unfreeze it is to let the battery die and then recharge it. The ipod they're selling now was last updated in 2015. I'd rather not buy old tech if new tech is around the corner. I'm hoping this is the year they bring out the new one.

It's definitely happening. I've got a friend who works for Apple who wink-wink nudge-nudged me about it. I have no details besides confirmation that it's happening. I had been waiting for years to upgrade my Hackintosh. Eventually the new Mac mini was released and the specs were good enough that I bit. So far loving it but I'll definitely update to the Mac Pro eventually.

My hope is that Apple will finally get the Mac Pro right. My fear is that it will cost an astronomical amount.
