And I could just buy one and swap my SSDs in, right? I don't know about MAC OS, but windows won't work if you swap hardware like that. it stores a snapshot of your hardware and if it changes too drastically it'll assume you're trying to use that install of windows on a new computer. It's part of how they tried to curtail piracy.. I assume that Apple did the same thing..

No, you can normally swap Mac drives ok and load OS
But, although you can diy something’s on the new mini, Ram I don’t think ssd is one.
Also apparently Apple is using an unusual torx screw.
Many are just getting the 512 ssd as a boot drive, everything else on external.

What's your interface?
There are some USB audio problems with newest macs. I'm looking at getting a Mac mini and will let you know how it goes

It's part of how they tried to curtail piracy.. I assume that Apple did the same thing.. Not to side-topic this, what Windows looks for now is the motherboard to be the same. Depending on the type of license and how long you've been running it, Windows will sometimes flag it. If your license allows, you can do a limited number of mobo swaps (I don't believe they ever disclosed how many). I've had times when it went fine, others when it was either too soon or the license did not allow it. Storage drives won't matter, nor will the CPU. I did some heavy swapping in Win 10 recently on two machines and it was ok when the mobo remained the same. Regarding the main topic, if I were going with a new Mac/PC, I'd go for a fresh install for the smoothest possible performance.

Why not buy direct from Apple?
Buy the extra RAM from OWC. I would not attempt to change the hard drive on the Mini.

Send it for repair first. But the Mini is not designed for modification.

Mac mini 2018 is everything I need. More money required for peripherals. RAM is user serviceable so I'll whack 32 gb in there
No problem with my DAC although it uses the core audio drivers (other DACs were affected by an apple update)

It would be nice if Tim Cook and the gang would address these constant rumors that Apple is going to dump Intel chips for their own chips.

Not that hard if you just follow online directiona On the newest model Mini, the hard drive is soldered to the logic board. It's *NOT* user upgradable (unless you've got a massive set of balls).

Apple’s goal is to make it impossible for the user to do any upgrades, of course this means their “ genius’s” can’t do anything either.
