The 760’s are great comps - I personally think a pair of Pye comps are the golden egg. Love those things and wish I could justify purchasing a pair. I use the Dolby trick a ton for BGV’s and it works wonderfully. I believe they have plugs for that now which I’ve been meaning to try out but haven’t gotten around to it. would the waves kramer helios and pie plugs be a good substitude for the hw? Not even close unfortunately.

I'm done buying plugins that claim they can capture and be the end-all saturation/compression/tapeeffect/distortion/etc to replace analog. At the end of the day they all are very 1 dimensional and just sound 'flat' or 'fake' to me or something. They will always be 1 trick poneys and maybe useful for a specific task, but will not have the creative possibilities of hardware.
I still think some of the plugin EQs have their place, and can at least approximate some of the vintage eq curves of that era. The UAD Helios has nice midrange curves which I find useful if pairing with other hardware in the chain. Plugin Compression beyond a couple db always will usually sound different than hardware and will not have the extra mojo.

I'd think the basics are the same. Just use thin shelled drums, thin heads with lots of dampening on them and tune them either loosely or tight depending on the style. Probably lose the bottom heads on the toms, and the front head on the kick. i tried to lose the bottom tom skin but it did not sound good. You have to tune for it, probably use a different top head. Also try micing the tom from inside.

My bias is towards using hardware.

i get my crispy snare from my snare bottom mic. Lotsa phase problems with that. And it's more of a late '70s/early '80s thing.
