Golden Age does not use better VU meters
Calubrating VU's is extremely easy and we can assist.
They are not important, as long as the display the correct GR, which they do

No need to get defensive, Joshua! I did calibrate the VU meter today, both the output gain and the GR. All calibrations were out of whack: +4, +10 and GR. It is extremely easy, as you say. Once I was done, I compared with my Golden Age comps, just to double check with another meter. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe the 3A circuit is less finicky, but mine ARE more accurate than the SA2A, and that is simply a fact. I wouldn't go as far as to say that VU meters are not important. They are a feature of the unit and they are important to me. They are a tool. I want to know what's happening with the audio path when it's out of the box. The SA2A sounds great and I did get a prompt reply to my tech questions, so no complaints, and no "email hell". All good here.

Not defensive, just facts It is probably the same VU More accurate on your non calibrated SA2A, hardly a fact my friend They are not important as long as they are accurate, that is what I said Glad you like the SA2A The new SA23A has an even better SA2A !

Just for clarity sake, the meter on the SA4000 acts nothing like the meter on any ssl I’ve used with the settings even remotely close.
All you’d have to do is have actual experience with both to see the difference.

As a generalization, I see metres as one indicator but make decisions based on my ears: the sound ?

All you’d have to do is have actual experience with both to see the difference. VU meters have specs. ANSI C16.5-1942 IEC 60268-17 I would be surprised if most of the products on the market rigorously adhere to these specs. But the question isn’t then are they good meters but do they match ballistics specs. Here’s some fun reading... www.aes.org/aeshc/pdf/mcknight_qa-on-the-svi-6.pdf
