re-burning the song? For instance...I'll often burn down "xxx - MIX2" for someone and then have to re-burn without the "mix2" because people have said it shows up in the metadata even if I change the file name...I've just taken their word for it...is that true? It would be nice not to have to open the session again and re-bounce. Especially when I use the summing mixer and have to do it in realtime.

I use sound forge as my mixdown software, and it has an option to change metadata when resaving a file. I never really tested it to see if it overwrite something, I gave always assumed that it just did.

Are you talking about wave files or MP3s?

DDP images can be changed without rewriting/rerendering anything, not sure about .wav files, maybe not.

Instead of reprinting your mixes you should be able to edit wave file metadata using one of the tag editors listed here: wavmetadata.blogspot.com/But I'm surprised that this is even an issue. Metadata in wave files is essentially useless AFAIK. It's not well standardized/implemented as you can see in the linked page. It's a confusing mess IMO. If I were you I'd see if I can get my DAW to just leave metadata out. No one ever asks me for metadata in waves...

Maybe I'm using "metadata" wrong...When I give this particular guy files to be sent off for CD printing, he always says that if they are burnt down as "Poo - MIX1" it shows up with the MIX1 even when you change the file name to just "Poo"...

You mean it shows that way in the CD Text on the CD? If that's the case then someone down the line is not using their Redbook CD authoring software correctly. It's easy to enter the song titles for CD Text. Still, it's weird that the wave file name isn't automatically used when put on CD. I've never heard of this. Who is doing the CD printing? Replication or duplication?

In windows I am able to view the file properties by right-clicking and "properties" then "details" and I'm able to click on any metadata attribute like "publisher" and change it.

KID3 is OSX freeware that can edit file tags.
iTunes also will, but...there are some 'gotchas' about what gets updated on the file vs the iTunes DB--so, use Kid3.

I believe you could also use MusicBrainz Picard, as it will allow you to edit associate details for any song file. Kid3 actually pulls data from the MusicBrainz database to fill in some of it's tagging. It's free and Mac OS picard.musicbrainz.org/

I use tag editors all the time for wave and flac format files. The metadata are just fields in the file header, so I don't have the time to re-render my stuff just for metadata. Rendering in Mixbus takes quite some time, all this analog emutlations... I almost always forget to input correct metadata in the project and note it when I listen to the result in foobar2000. There are plugins that allow to edit them right in the player... Metadata in wav of flac files should not be underestimated in times of digital distribution and the vanishing of physical CDs ... I don't even have an optical drive in my computers anymore...
