I have someone wanting me to ship to Montreal on an item that I've had trouble selling, and Montreal isn't as far for me as shipping to Los Angeles, or some other SW USA states.
For you Canadians, or those who have shipped to Canada from the USA: Is there anything I need to know about shipping to Canada? Any extra costs? Tariffs etc.? Or, is it business as usual going to UPS, getting the cost and billing the customer based on the shipping.
Thanks to any with info!

Use USPS. UPS and FedEx sometimes use contract couriers and they'll charge extra to deliver on top of what you paid, but they'll demand COD from the recipient.
Fell into that trap once.

You should be able to just send it and include the price and item description?
Check if client has a myusaddress account. They may be prepared to go pick it up in the states and import themselves.

Yeah, USPS. I have one friend who buys stuff from me all the time, he usually pays a 25% import tax. Not sure at what CA$ amount that kicks in.

Watch the shipping sizes, if it's something big that can limit the available service choices.
Also, anything insured over $2499 has to go through a customs broker. This has apparently always been true, but is being enforced now.

We have a good and services tax of between 13-14% depending on your province and we pay additional duties of about 6/8% typically for electronics.
Different couriers also charge a brokerage fee and handling and we pay currency exchange , shipping and insurance.

I prefer USPS when I buy from the States, UPS and the other couriers always seem to add more charges. When I mail to the states or overseas I use Canada Post with no problem, and it seems to be significantly cheaper than the couriers. Government-run cheaper than independent companies, weird! Seems to be true with our health insurance as well.

USPS has alaways been the least expensive and best service across the boarder.

The higher level Global Express Guaranteed services are actually carried across the border and delivered to the destination country by FedEx, but without their fees and paperwork.

NEVER UPS FOR CANADA. I bought 2 Binder connectore for 50 USD, and UPS charged me 75 CAD more for the taxes AND their outrageous broker fees.
