Ohhhhh drBill got one?! DUDE! You're going to LOVE IT. These things are BONKERS. Yup. I sure hope so. I think I will - that's why I bought one. Do you have one? Are you speaking from experience??

I couldn’t do it. I’m trying hard to stay focused on the music and less on gear acquisition, which inevitably eats up my time. Plus, I’ve been jonesing for an ES-335 bad lately. The way I stay focused on music is to create a studio environment where music thrives. Gear helps that.

Yep! I scored one during the first small batch sale It simply does things that NONE of my other outboard comps can do. I've used it on all manner of sources.. with great success. I've found it's a box that, the more you use it, the more uses you find for it. If that makes any sense.... It's a no brainer on drums. I also use it a ton on 2buss (very lightly, mostly for box tone and slightly exaggerating transients); typically with a VCA comp either before or after. I'm an admitted AS fanboi. I've used and owned a ton of gear over the years, but the AS gear just speaks to me in a certain way. Every Audioscape unit I own is astounding in many different ways, regardless of price; but the prices just make the whole experience that much sweeter.

Got it this morning. Came thru shipping unscathed and ready to work! Immediately dropped it into the desk and started to figure out the essence of the unit. First dropped it on a HUGE 808/Electronic kick that was massive on the LF. Immediately, I was able to calm down the LF at the same time as intensifying the attack. It put a nice point on things while controlling the unusually large LF content of the track. But even with the SC at 320Hz, it knocked off a bunch of LF. Which I needed this time, but left me wondering if using it in parallel might be the ticket for a lot of things. As a side note, pulling the attack slower brought back a bunch of the LF. A nice way to tailor things. As I kind of suspected from watching the video, nothing else I own with the exception of my vintage Dyna-Mites will put such a "point" on a source. Thats a good thing. It seems to be full of fun stuff & there is lots of real estate to explore. Will comment again after more usage....... PS - great packaging, good, solid controls, nice look and vibe, and unique and distinctive "sound".

Awesome thoughts, Bill! You'll venture down an awesome, but fairly shallow rabbit hole with the D-Comp... I've found, as AS mentions, the S/C HPF and Attack controls are the two most powerful sound and envelope manipulating controls on the thing. Comp/Limit modes each have different time constants as well, which takes this even further and can be fun to flip back and forth to find which best suits the material at hand.
Extremely, amazingly FUN box!
Love your descriptor regarding how it adds awesome "point" like nothing else quite does. Had a pair of OG Dyna-Mites years ago and actually DO remember them being capable of a similar thing... Time flies!
Soon enough, you'll be trying it on 2BUSS! hahaha... I love it in front of a VCA Comp (Buss Comp in this case).

Latest dComp update :
I started mixing a Delta Blues / Americana style project this morning. Very dirty, very grimy. Using the dComp on DI'd Bass. Wanted it to sound like an amp. First up, bass thru a Silver Bullet on A mode to bring some live attitude back - pushing fairly hard. Then thru a Locomotive 286a to put some "tube amp" grind on it. Then thru the D Comp to even things out, and put a little pointed definition back on it.
Perfection. Sounds like a mildly pushed flip top. Dirty, but still sweet. A world away from the well performed, but lackluster DI'd bass sound I was given. Super quick and simple. I'm happy.
The only plugins on this project so far is EchoFarm for some delay. Hardware is bringing the love.

Most of the aggression is coming from the Silver Bullet and Locomotive, but I was surprised at what the dComp brought to the table. I expected the definition and "point", but it also added some nice grind and sustain. Well done!!

3 Stams and a pair of Audioscape this week! Kick ass! Yeah, I got a little carried away. The Stam’s were paid for a while back, though. I’ve got to purge; some things have to go. I’m out of rack space and patchbay I/O. Haven’t decided what’s going yet. I put up my Gretsch and Les Paul locally for sale to offset the 335 purchase (which I scored a killer deal on. I’d make off it if I had to sell). Also, I have one more thing coming to check out, well, a pair of things actually. Could end up being really sweet.

audioscape - Put the D-Comp on a real jabby, percussive, distorted Stevie-esque guitar today. Fills around the melody. I wanted some warmth and control and some attitude. My 3a's were spanking it, but I needed them elsewhere. The Splices were nice, and really aggressive, but not quite what I was after. The Manley was warming things up and keeping the levels in check, but I still needed something else. Added a little Miad @ 2.5k, and cut a little at 330Hz, and it was better. Added the DCompn AFTER the Miad, pushed the input really hard - and BOOM! There's the attitude. In spades. A killer almost "plucked" vibe to the jabby, percussive fills. Like a cross between a hammer and steel pick plucks. Wild, and super cool. Loving it. Different than my other comps. I think my meters might die someday. This thing is always slamming the red. LOL It just sounds right there.

Input cranked almost always or close to it. It just gets that "thing" going on, as you said, in spades. I think many feel this way. The D CAN be subtle.... but SLAMMING it is just OH so much fun! Thanks as always, Bill, for the amazing feedback.

Anyone using the DComp on mastering duties? We have quite a few customers buying and using the D-COMP strictly for the mastering rigs as well as 2BUSS duties; great care needs to be taken with the SC HPF but folks are having some AMAZING results. The ONE drawback is the lack of stepped switches on the Input, Output and Release but if you can get past that and if you LOVE color and uniquely, oddly, "SLAM THE HELL OUT OF IT" without artifacts types of sonics WHILE adding a sublime "point" to your mixes transients (thanks for this descriptor, drBill, I use it all the time and it's PERFECT!). Glad y'all are digging our D. It's definitely become a super popular product of ours (then again, we can't keep ANYTHING on the shelves these days... not for more than a few minutes, at least.... Cheers guys!
