My SA3A and SA47 arrived this morning.
First thing I did was look inside the SA3A.
Really clean build, nice workmanship.
The outside of the unit looks amazing.
By far the prettiest piece of gear I have ever owned. Just brilliant!
Sounds really good. Just like the SA76 and SA2A it has a "solidity" that is just wonderful. A lot of clones don't have this.
Tried it out quickly on bass, acoustic , electric and vocals.
Really nice. Will take some time to find its niche. But certainly electric guitars and backing vocals are my first thought for me.
The SA47.
Well......
I have sung through a couple of U47s (one at Shannon Rhodes house) and some other really good mics U67, Elam etc
I also have a Vintage U87 that has been on my last 5 albums as my main vocal mic. Everything you guys have heard me sing has been through that 87.
The SA47 does exactly what a U47 does for me.
Makes me sound larger than life.... but in that familiar vocal tone that we have grown accustomed to.
It sounds "real" but "Realer" 8)
Way way better than my long ago sold Beesneez T1 which cost me over twice the price of this SA47.
There is that big bottom end in cardoid that you expect up close on the 47. Back up and balance it out, beautiful.
It just may have the best top end of any mic I have ever sung into. Clear, articulate , not a hint of ess or spit.
This is a brilliant microphone.
The shock mount is tight and doesn't droop.
The Power supply is quite attractive in its own right, and has a really pretty knob on it to select between omni and cardoid.
Omni sounds like omni should.
The mic is quiet, certainly for a tube mic.
Lots of output.
The case is nice, long long mic lead. Wooden box to keep the mic in.
I had a nightmare with DHL in Australia getting the gear off them, none of it Stam's fault. Just my luck I guess.
All sorted now.
It was a really long wait for both bits of gear... but honestly considering a LA3A would set me back 3 grand here in Oz and a U47 in excess of 10 grand, how can you complain?
I waited a long time, but I got answers from STAM anytime I contacted them. Realistically its just a great sonic bargain.
I bought 3 spare tubes from Bowie when I ordered the mic, and over time I will try them out.
I think I will also purchase a second Rycote shock mount for the 47 as I have one for my 87 and its just super safe and stable.
I will put up some samples soon, got a busy weekend and I want to get cracking on vocals for my next record in the new year.
Cheers
