I know that some of you know a lot more about old tape decks than I do. If operational is this old Ampex of any value as a studio acquisition? If not, I may still buy if for the 19" rack (estate sale.)

Didn’t see the playback electronics, what’s the track format? Speed? Of Course in the end it comes down to condition, condition. Especially heads and not even the guys at JRF can tell by eye. So don’t bid anymore than you would based on it looks cool.
This brought to you by the guy with 5 tape machines in storage who’s wife talked him out of an Ampex 1100-16 last month😁

You need a model #. If it’s an 800, it’s a TEAC.

Id pass. The tape clutch guide is bent..
Though It looks like the machine I learned to edit tape on..which I can't quite remember. Is it a 440?
Transport doesn't look like the same one.

Yeah it looks close, but not quite like my 440. Didn’t look that closely at the clutch. If the auction is on line a couple of guys probably have snipes set up at their parts machine ceiling. After a couple of conversations with a local auctioneer who dose a lot of HAM / antique Radio stuff, I always want to see the electronics and the transport, to often consigners don’t know you need the electronics.

Thanks for all the help guys! This is at an auction house not far from me, and the auction is tomorrow morning. So I can't really get more specific on model numbers. There are actually 3 decks in two large 19" racks. (one is NOT bent.) If I had a pick up truck and storage space I'd probably bite because I sense they'll go cheap. I'd love one of the racks, but not badly enough to figure out the logistics of making it happen on an already busy day. I was just curious if anyone upon seeing the pic would insist I make it happen! The auction is in central CT so if anyone wants more specific info PM me.

Here's another pic of one of the other decks. I really like the old school rack. One of the racks is bent but this one seemed to be in good shape. I can't vouch for anything regarding the decks because they were pushed up against the wall. This place mostly auctions furniture and antiques so I was surprised to see gear.

View AttachmentStill don’t see any electronics they could be either logging or instrument recorders.
