Hey guys, my SA-3A pair has arrived yesterday. I immediatly plugged them in (after putting back a loose screw on the PCB of one of the units). I was a little bit scared as my previous Stam experience with a pair of SA-76 had been very underwhelming (I sold them 2 weeks after getting them) but initial impressions are these are seriously good compressors. I could go back and forth between an SA3A and an SA2A on a guitar track, and I could hear the same family, with the SA2A being way fatter. I compared them to the Nebula emulation by Tim Petherick, and the SA3A is way better. Let me tell you there's no nned to talk here about the black rooster of Waves plugins compared to the Stam unit. I have yet to try them on bass and vocals, but they seem very nice compressors. More in the following days.

Cool! I'm hoping to receive my SA2A sometime this year or the next one... I have a pair of Golden Age Comp 3A that sound great to my ears, it'd be interesting to compare them against the Stam.

Or to the grandaddy of all 3a clones - Serpents SA3a. Fantastic!! This is the one I'm most interested in hearing the Stam compared to. I haven't heard the Serpent SA3a yet but if it is anything like their Splice MKII then I bet it's awesome!

Almost bought a pair of these. Decided my money would be better spent on an SA3A from sperent instead but jealous! Love the la3a..

Great 3a's are awesome. Can't speak to any but the vintage units and the Serpents which are so close that they are interchangeable from my perspective. A great 3a is a constant staple on my compressor list. IMO, getting the iron right is the secret sauce.

Wish the parts kit was still available from serpent but I have the bom so I'll just have to do it myself!

Since we're talkin' LA3As, I've got a Mohog Mo3a (pair in 2u rack linkable) that sounds great on electric guitars among other things. Congrats on the new gear avgatzeblouz !

I've been wanting to, but holding off on buying a Mohog 3a-pair clone. Mainly because of their notorious commuinication challenges... But has anyone compared these to an original LA3a and have a report to share? I'm very curious . . . not quite ready to drop the $1999 on one

Quoting a client from GS, he is quite a reputable engineer I believe
"Ok so I spent some time last night comparing the Stam SA3a's to my Recapped Urei 3A's and I was very happy. I always keep my Urei's in the limit mode and love to use them on kick and snare when I record and mix. I only have them limiting maybe 1-2 DB's, I love the balls that they add. I multed a kick and snare track from a recent project to the Urei's and the Stams and the Stam's sounded wonderful!! I had some clients listen and they chose the Stams. The Stams are a bit brighter but that is fine with me. It's hard to tell the difference between the Urei's and the Stam's. Well done Josh!!"
They are extremely close with an original UREI, these are the easiest units to match with the original counterpart as the same or very similar iron is still being made.

I'm going to have to wait until after Christmas, unfortunately . . . if the woman sees much more money going into new gear this month, I will be living in the studio. Well, I guess I pretty much do now, but I get to visit the kids a few times a day, and she's got a great . . . behind. LOL

Thanks We exchanged some emails when I got them, it was in may. I was just disappointed about their sound. No headroom, and thin sounding. To me they were sounding "cheap". That is the word I come up with (I am not a native english speaking person), even though I don't want to seem insulting at all. I have access to a friend's original one and a pair of other replicas and it confirmed my feelings. I had to sell them because shipping them back to you was too expensive. I still lost some money out of it, but fortunately you had originally given me a very nice discount on the pair. That is the risk of buying gear far away without a chance to demo it, I guess. Back to the SA3A, I think they are awesome.

I have many clients than own the original UREI counterpart and they can't tell them apart, we never had anybody return them either. I am sorry this was not properly handled, it should have been sent for servicing. Maybe we can send you an ADG for trials. They use large transformers which means a nice bandwidth (low end) and headroom for days. We purposely purchase large core transformers on our units for this reason, they are more expensive but it makes a nice difference.

All my cash went on a pair of... Well you know what (hint : a pair of LA3A clones made somewhere in south america).
